Food ordered: Hot n Sour Soup, Kung Pao Chicken, Chicken Chowmein, Chicken chilli dry, Egg Fried Rice, Sticky steamed rice, Dumplings.
This was my first visit since it became Sesame and Soy [formerly Dragon City].
Dumplings clearly stood out, pan seared, grilled to perfection and absolutely delicious, the red pepper sauce was out of this world.
Second in line was Kung Pao, exuded flavourful notes of sweetness, crispiness and caramalized chicken blended in a dark sauce that truly rocked. But the serving size was dismal vs the price.
The rest of the food was just like any other localised version of Chinese food. What came out least desirable was the steamed sticky rice, it was dry undercooked and not sticky at all. Apart from the rice dishes, I took an issue with the serving size.
Chicken chilli dry was laden with gravy and bordered on being confused for chicken jalfrezi. The sauce and gravy of the Chowmein wasn't too different either.
My assessment of the food is limited to the dishes I ordered and not meant to be applied to the entire menu.
Service: The waiters appeared untrained, didn't know which side and how to approach customers and had no idea how to place cutlery and crockery on the table. As an example, when we asked for chopsticks, 5 chopstick sets were dumped near the dinner plate of one of us. We noticed how they cluttered the main course on one side for the table. We were miffed by the waiting staff's loud exchanges, their fatigue and frustration was visible, some could be seen dragging their feet around. The waiters seemed unintentionally crass and unkempt. Apathy was visible.
Atmosphere: The interior was impressive. The overall noise was unbearable, that is, if you enjoy your meal in a calm setting. The clanking of dropping cutlery - some by the waiters and others by customers, the blaring music that belied the very notion of a Chinese restaurant Gen X'rs like me have grown...
Read moreWe were 3 people, sesame & soy crispy beef with broccoli and dam dam noodle were 2 of the dishes among others we ordered. Nothing mentioned in the menu that beef comes with sweet sauce, we said ok but there is no aroma, balance of the herbs and sweet in the food, we just felt the sweet taste. Then 'surprise', dam dam noodle has also got a very sharp sweet sauce which is also not mentioned in the menu. When l asked to the waiter, he said there's no sweet sauce in it but sweet baby corns 😅, we all insisted on that its not the corns but the sauce then he offered to change it. What ever l was asking to the waiter about the food, his answer was ok, ok, ok. l said what is ok? He said ok, ok. We lost all our appetite, such a struggle then we asked for a soup not to take any risk of sweet and received very regular corn soup. Loafology was the reference for me trying Sesame & Soy but it has got nothing to do with the food quality of loafology (The owner is the same group). lt was just a waste of time and money. Especially for the people who know asian cuisine, l never recommend Sesame & Soy. Such a disappointment. Okys ventilation is very poor, as soon as you get in, a heavy smell and smoke welcomes you. When you ask the reason of the smoke that hurts your eyes, the answer is the hot pot they are serving to...
