I'm traveling in Panama City and have been trying to find some good local foods, and I ran across this little restaurant right by the street today. It runs like a food truck, and they don't have a menu posted anywhere. Took me some bravery to go up there, and right away I wanted to try since all the items look very yummy. It took me a while to figure out what to order (since I don't speak Spanish), and thankfully a local young lady and her mom helped me translate. I ordered a cup of sancocho pollo, some chuletas, and an arepa! They are all very flavorful! They have an outdoor grill, and they make the arepas there. I was quoted an inflated price for soup, different from the price that was loudly and clearly announced to the previous and next customer a few seconds before me. The cashier called the manager, who, after looking at me (a white foreigner), confirmed that the price was higher "for me". This is direct evidence of discrimination based on nationality. It's outdoor seating, yet, my sweet and docile dog was targeted for hate by a very annoying old lady. The owner tried to calm things, but, how can you win with a Karen?
