ALA - E Hippie House — Restaurant in Coron

This is a little gem hidden up the hillside of Coron. We were staying at the bed and breakfast next door called Casa Montemar, and were too tired to venture downtown for food. We decided to give this hippie restaurant a try since it was open. From the beginning the owner was super duper friendly and genuine. He’s kinda shy but friendly at the same time- don’t know how to describe it! Just a really cute funny hippie guy whom we immediately felt relaxed with. He introduced his menu to us very elaborated and that is really commendable. Over the next 6 days, we ate like 90% of our meals in Coron there. There was never a lack of interesting dishes to order and every dish was always a pleasant surprise. I’m chinese and I particularly appreciate his usage of good healthy ingredients like black fungus and black chinese mushrooms. Every meal felt packed with nutrients and above all- it was tasty, original and very creative. It takes a while for the food to be cooked from scratch; but it worked out for us cos we ordered an hour in advance via phone text and popped over to the restaurant to eat when they notified us that the food was ready. They also packed the food in takeaway bags for us when we chose to eat in our hotel room. And another time, they literally carried the food tray over. The dishes are all served in homely beautiful bowls so it feels so cosy even eating takeout. The prices are very affordable and value for money considering the large serving size and the quantity and quality of fresh ingredients used. Personally, I would really rather eat here than other establishments in Coron town. The vibe here is nice, the owner is very kind person and deserves more support and acknowledgement for the high standard of cooking and creativity his restaurant offers. I’ll stay near here for sure the next time I’m back in Coron just so I can eat here...

I don’t usually leave negative reviews, but this place well and truly takes the cake in terms of all round awfulness.

The vibe of the restaurant is cool and it’s cute and quirky, however we were 4 people and it took around 2.5 hours to get our food even though no one else ordered or was served food between the time we arrived and when we got our food. They served all of us over the space of about 20 minutes and they gave me my curry without the rice i ordered to go with it. This took around 10 minutes and by the time it arrived the curry was cold.

I then realized that the curry was not a curry but just some over cooked chicken with bones still on in some kind of split coconut sauce and with a huge amount of oil or fat in the bottom. When I complained about this I got no apology. I actually ended up having to go somewhere else to order takeaway food while everyone else ate because I was so hungry and they didn’t make any offer to fix the issue or provide something else.

When paying I told them I didn’t want to pay for the meal and that I had to get food from somewhere else and the waitress told me that if I didn’t pay that she would have to pay for it. I asked to speak to the manager who refused to come out. In the end I paid this because I didn’t want someone who is more than likely earning a low wage to pay for my meal. I feel like this is extremely bad service and also incredibly hard on the staff as this was not the waitresses fault. Everyone else had pretty average food.

Great place! Definitely a hippie bar with very low seats and tables. Almost like you're sitting on the floor but very comfortable. Very clean and nicely decorated, with a chill hippie atmosphere.
