Vale do Tabua Wine & Tapas — Restaurant in Alijó

I was verbally abused and physically assaulted over a dispute with a bill at this awful restaurant by the owner, who does not speak English but seems to understand it on a very basic level. I had not ordered a plate of food for my 3 year old daughter, who I wanted instead to share a pizza with my elder daughter. When our food came the owner brought a plate for her that we had not ordered. We explained that we did not want it. He became very aggressive and agitated. He explained that the restaurant's policy was that each person needed to buy at least one dish at €15. We disagreed with it applying to a 3 year old, especially as there were only place settings for 4. I suggested to my family of 5 (wife and 3 children, ages 11, 10 and 3) that they leave while I dealt with the money as the atmosphere became very tense. I calculated how much we owed (each dish is €15, we ordered 4 of them, plus drinks) and the amount came to under €90. I left 90€ on the table and followed my family out of the establishment. The owner ran out after me, aggressively shouting at me. I explained that I had left cash on the table. He went back to the restaurant, and then came outside again, this time even more aggressive and angry. He grabbed my arm and backpack and tried to drag me back to the restaurant. I had to brace myself as he raised his fists to punch me. My family were extremely distressed and had called for help among nearby tour operators and the tourist office manager, all of whom witnessed the attack. They later explained that he was well know locally as a madman and who took advantage of tourists. I went back to the restaurant to try to calm the situation. I pointed to the cash on the table. The owner picked it up and dragged me over to his wife to calculate the bill. As expected it was less than €90 I told them to keep it and left. I have read many bad reviews of this establishment, although none with as violent of an outcome as mine. Many agree the food and service is very poor. Um lugar para não repetir. Eles nos fizeram sentir mal, eles têm regras absurdas e abusivas. Em algumas mesas o consumo mínimo é de 70€ a 100€. As pessoas não são nada simpáticas, bem, sim, só com turistas para que gastem mais dinheiro. Eles obrigam a pedir um prato (13€) com o vinho por pessoa, para nós sim, para outros clientes alemães que estavam lá não. As fotos não podem ser tiradas. Dá a sensação de que você está trabalhando para eles e o que quer que você peça, eles o consideram um tolo. Como mudar de mesa para outra mais distante por causa do barulho de entrar e sair do bar. Não aceitam Multibanco e se duas ou mais pessoas partilharem os pratos, está incluído um extra de 1€ por cada prato. Sinceramente, tem gente que nunca deveria se engajar no trato com o público, porque deixa uma cidade bonita em um lugar ruim.

Obligan a pedir un plato (13€) con el vino por persona, a nosotros si, a otros clientes alemanes que estaban allí no. No se pueden hacer fotos. Da la sensación que estás trabajando para ellos y cualquier cosa que pides, te toman como tonto. Como cambiar de mesa a una que esté más lejos por el ruido de entrar y salir de la barra. No aceptan Multibanco y si dos o más personas comparten platos, se incluye un extra de 1€ por cada plato. Sinceramente, hay personas que jamas deberían dedicarse al trato al público, porque deja en mal lugar una bella ciudad.

A place not to repeat. They made us feel bad, they have absurd and abusive rules. In some tables the minimum consumption is €70-€100. The people are not nice at all, well, yes, only with tourists so that they spend more money. They force you to order a plate (€13) with the wine per person, for us yes, for other German clients who were there no. Photos cannot be taken. It gives the feeling that you are working for them and whatever you ask for, they take you for a fool. Like changing tables to one that is further away because of the noise of entering and leaving the bar. Ein Ort, an dem man sich nicht wiederholt. Sie haben uns ein schlechtes Gewissen gemacht, sie haben absurde und missbräuchliche Regeln. In einigen Tischen beträgt der Mindestverzehr 70-100 €. Die Leute sind überhaupt nicht nett, na ja, nur mit Touristen, damit sie mehr Geld ausgeben. Sie zwingen Sie, einen Teller (13 €) mit dem Wein pro Person zu bestellen, für uns ja, für andere deutsche Kunden, die dort waren, nein. Fotos können nicht gemacht werden. Tourist trap - beware! The only good thing about this place is the view over the river. Went there with my girlfriend and felt completely ripped off. This is June 2022 and the place is called vale do tabua. 1 - you cant use outdoor tables just for drinks, they all say reserved, unless you are having some “tapas”, in which case the owner will happily get you one of the reserved tables. This is where the rip off starts 2 - if you want to share a tapa, there’s an additional 1€pp which is for the “additional plates service” 3 - food was small portions and poor quality, very overpriced for what you get 4 - we had some white wine which was average. We paid 4.5€ for a glass of white house wine( which is actually from the owners vineyard) and he suggested my girlfriend to try the reserve version of the wine, we actually thought would be a sample offer, he actually charged us 7,5€.
