Girassol — Restaurant in Elvas

Went there with friends. High recommendations on google across the street and on the street behind (Luis Cobra and Dinis) did not have vegetarian dishes and were completely packed so we came here.

Asked for the tasting menu described in the menu as including bread, pate, soup, main dish, desert and coffee.

Said we did not want the pate, only ordered 2 soups instead of the 3 we could have. Ordered olive oil to have with the bread while we waited (nothing was mentioned and we were charged 2 euros at the end, no mention in menu for charges and no mentions verbally when ordered).

Asked about the options included in the menu for us to choose from and got told one thing by the server and then a different thing by the owner when we tried to order (in fairness he allowed for the vegetarian dish to be part of the menu for our friend).

When we asked about the desert the server told us there was no restriction while the owner told us it was only the egg pudding. Becoming quite unpleasant. Then corrected himself and said it was coffee or desert. We only ordered one desert so we could try it and one coffee.

So we did not ask even for everything which was stated in the menu as included and already got a snide comment about people wanting more than what things are worth (note we ordered something listed in the menu).

When we asked why we had a surcharge we were told the olive oil was extra (sneak charges are illegal in Portugal unless listed clearly in the menu so I will put a proper complaint as well given the rudeness of the behavior towards the end).

Overall a restaurant which could be nice if it weren’t for the entitlement of the owner who tried to cheat us at every turn and blamed us for trying to get more than what is worth.

We will not return, don’t worry so you can save the reply and we will file the complaint and will fill sorry for the employees when you inevitably tank. We know understand why the other restaurants were full and you were...

Restaurante muito bonito com pratos tradicionais/portugueses, com boa confeção. Sobre isso, nada a reclamar.

A reclamar: As 2 garrafas de água vieram abertas: rolha de cortiça. E sobre isto, relato o seguinte: A primeira garrafa de água não pedimos; trouxeram e colocaram em cima da mesa, aquando das entradas (também não pedidas, mas das quais comemos pão, patê e azeitonas). Pensei que essa água fosse "cortesia", devido ao calor que se sentia. Pedimos as bebidas desejadas (refrigerantes e vinho verde em jarro) e, depois, pedimos mais uma garrafa de água. Aqui verificámos que, mais uma vez, assim que a garrafa chegou à mesa , era aberta imediatamente pelo funcionário e a rolha era de cortiça; No pagamento, verificámos, que o valor cobrado por duas garrafas de água (0.7 l), das quais não sabiamos a origem, foi de 5€. Na fatura (vista já em casa), vem escrito que a água era "filtrada", mas isto não nos foi comunicado, nem quando colocaram a primeira garrafa em cima da mesa (e pensei que era a tal "cortesia"), nem quando pedimos mais uma. Ou seja, bebemos 1.4 l de água filtrada por 5€, cuja origem devia ser a torneira...;

2 pessoas do grupo pediram um bitoque para cada, e as outras duas duas meias dose, que estavam marcadas a 9.50€/cada. Uma das pessoas perguntou se, na sua meia dose, não poderia vir um pouco de "migas". O proprietário disse, amavelmente que "sim" e ao chegar a meia dose, verificou-se que vinha a carne e o acompanhamento era, apenas, as migas. Entendemos que o senhor teria percebido assim e substituído o acompanhamento pelas migas, em vez do que seria normal para nós (o acompanhamento mais as migas)... E nada dissemos até ao pedido da conta, que nos chamou a atenção porque, no final, esta meia dose apareceu com o preço de 18.50€ (o único valor que nos chamou a atenção, no local). O proprietário disse que tinha percebido, que tínhamos pedido uma dose, mas nós dissemos que "não" poderia ser", até porque o "tamanho" não era de dose e nem trazia o acompanhamento devido, sendo apenas acompanhado pelas migas. Ao colocarmos o preço desta meia dose em causa, o proprietário então disse que "não havia problema" e realmente baixou de 18.50€ para 10€, e nem vimos mais nada.

Ao chegarmos a casa, verificámos que a outra meia dose foi cobrada, também, a 10€ (em vez dos 9.50€ descritos). Não comemos sobremesas.

This place has been a big surprise from all perspectives. After 9 days visiting half of the Portugal here I found the best codfish (suggested the one with clams), but in reality all the food was good, the service very nice and the best is to see all the local people enjoying a dinner and for the whole time singing emotional Alentejo and Elvas songs and poetry with all tables cheering and becoming a single one.
