Jard.in Magnólia — Restaurant in Funchal

We went here for the Christmas day set menu and were very disappointed. My wife ended up with food poisoning after eating chicken arancini (perhaps it had been stored or reheated incorrectly!?) and we unfortunately didn't have the best experience as guests. Our table was initially well situated but soon we realised we were right next to where a family was gathering to take a group photo. Our initial enjoyment of 'people watching' on Christmas day quickly turned into several members of the family surrounding and bumping into us as we tried to eat and their young children falling into our table. We tried to get the attention of staff to move but nobody was around for the 15 minutes or so of shoving we had to endure. We eventually decided to leave as my wife began to feel unwell from the Arancini and cut our losses. There wasn't much choice of places to eat on Christmas day and this seemed like a solid option. Food was nice, good atmosphere. Saw some of the previous reviews before going and one thing that stood out was getting charged for the bread which surely I thought was either they didn’t hear or people ordered the bread. Everyone in the reviews was right, they don’t ask you, just bring 2 little slice per person and butter with olives (olives wasn’t even touched), they don’t tell you that this will be charged nor ask of you want it, just simply bring it to you and charge you €4 for them and also tap water is charged at €3.50. In two minds whether I’d go again, food was good and good atmosphere but don’t like the feeling of getting ripped off. Could have been cleared/ offered the choice rather than just put on the table...

I had a very disappointing experience here. The whole visit took over 3 hours, which is unacceptable for a simple dinner. The waiting time was incredibly long — we had to wait ages for the menu, the food, and even just to get the attention of the staff. The service itself was terrible: the staff were inattentive and unfriendly, which made the entire experience unpleasant. To make things worse, they kept refilling our water and bringing more bread without asking, and then charged us for it. It felt like a sneaky way to increase the final bill. Definitely not...
