Restaurante Chalet — Restaurant in Funchal

This Is a lovely little restaurant located again in the same area near the Savoy hotel and casino.

We were seated outside however due to the rain we were promptly moved inside. The restaurant has two seating areas, one in the front and one in the back. For some reason we were seated in the front. This may seem all well and good however the evening was slightly ruined by the waiting service bell that kept ringing. It would have been ok but this was an actual doorbell sound which after two or three got really annoying. To top this off the chef also had an argument with a waitress outside the kitchen where we were seated. They both seemed oblivious that myself and my friend were trying to enjoy our meal or evening. This put a bit of a damper on the atmosphere.

The food was excellent. I had tempura prawns to start which was a generous portion. For mains I had steak which was cooked as requested and tasted amazing.

Service was very good apart from what was mentioned above. Young waitressing staff but attentive and polite. Came over and asked how the food was and even gave us recommendations for maderia wines which I thought was very nice.

Yes they do a cheap meal of the day offer, which was what we wanted one evening. I booked a table. We arrived, had to stand outside waiting, even though many empty tables. Then shown into a side dark room, I said is there a better place, I have booked ... so then got taken to a nice table. Service was terribly slow, even though the staff all seemed very pleasant. Over 20 mins to order drinks, an hour for soup, 2 hours overall with far too much lack of service. The soup was ok, the main course was Bland and tasteless. The sweet I left.... not like me! Great food at this lovely little restaurant. Whenever we're in Funchal, we love to have an evening meal here. The food is great and the atmosphere is good. The staff are very attentive. I had the meat skewer this time and my wife the lamb chops. Both were delicious. Be aware that you only get one side included with meal. If you want potatoes and vegetables , that's an extra cost. My only negative, which is why I give it four stars out of five is the price of the bread and butter. It's quoted as €1.85 per portion, however it is €1.85 per half slice. €7.40 for four half slices of bread and two butters is ridiculous. We will return but will remember not to have the...
