We found this restaurant on our last night last year and vowed to go back because it was so good. We turned up and told to sit wherever we wanted which on reflection is not good sign. We were given food menus but no drinks menu. We looked at the menu’s for some time but soon realised none of the staff would make eye contact with us. After about 15 mins we managed to ask the waitress for a drink menu and was told curtly ‘yes in a minute’. She went off and never brought the menu. We heard a young couple behind us order another drink and then saying to each other ‘When do actually think we might get some food?’ at this point we decided enough was enough and left. Probably a lucky escape, and at least we had not had a drink. There were only 3 staff on and they were having to do their own drink orders. Absolutely no one inside but about 7 to 8 tables with people outside. Maybe this was the difference last time only 2...

Ca Te Espero Friday Night: Serves excellent good tasty food. You pay for meat and extras such as vegetables, salad, chips etc are counted as extras. Would rather pay for a whole meal price, even though the price would be higher. Water, you pay more for this than beer! Has a wine list too. Dining can be in or out. No ambience or atmosphere for us. Waiting and serving time was very slow. Waiters seemed preoccupied and took no interest in us as new holiday customers. Regular Maderian family got served straight away and waiters had more rapport with them, as obviously they frequent the place more. Disappointed with lack of attention. Will not visit again. Perhaps this was just a busy day for the restaurant as other reviews are favourable, but l review as l find...

Based on the great reviews we tried Ca Te Espero but were disappointed. Although the service was quick and prices reasonable, the staff were unsmiling and perfunctory. The cheese and sausage sharing board was basic, like something left over from continental breakfast. However the biggest downside was the menu fails to tell you that mains come with no vegetables. No fries, no sauce, not even a sprig of salad garnish. The waiter inquired if we wanted extra sides, something we normally decline, but we ordered one and glad we did when the mains arrived and this was all there was. My wife was disappointed and I have to say we won't...

This was a great find, great atmosphere and fantastic service. I decided to go for the scabbard fish with banana. It was amazing. After I tried the pear soaked in red wine with ice cream. You can sit on the terrace outside, which has nice lighting. Or inside, but the TV is on. Staff were patient and kind. I actually went twice for that pair as it was so good I had a glass of madeira wine, which was really nice

Tasty traditional Portuguese food. Absolutely delicious. Acceptable prices. Very cozy atmosphere. Would recommend. Be aware though that next to the wall at the corner live salamanders that come out in the evening for a fly hunt. I recommend to sit by the street if you are not used to lizards.
