Carvoeiro de Carnide — Restaurant in Lisbon

The food is average, me and my partner had the bacalhau à lagareiro and it was fine, though the ends were a bit burnt and there was far too much coriander put on, with basic boiled potatoes. The biggest issue was our waiter: he heard us speak English and immediately was annoyed, stating he had no English menu and walked away without even listening to us. We didn’t want nor need an English menu: we can speak three languages and understood the menu in Portuguese, especially as we knew we both wanted the bacalhau which isn’t exactly a niche dish. But he acted like we’d asked him to hand translate the menu and was genuinely unpleasant. His mood put us in a mood and made the whole affair very unfriendly. Service is chaos, they sat us next to an aquarium with dead fish in it and to top it off they put someone else’s drinks on our bill. This was resolved but was still unprofessional and the icing on a poor experience. The price isn’t even that cheap. Overall avoid, there’s much nicer...

Maybe this was just a bad experience as the place looks nice. But today we ordered 4 stone grills, 3 looked really nice, mine was clearly meat ends on several pieces instead of a single chunk of beef as supposed. With a lot of fat stripes I could not enjoy my serve. Made a remark and there was no reaction at all from the staff, either to apologize or to try to solve the unpleasant situation in some other way. Got disturbed often to access a technical room to change some beer barrels, there was some issue which made the staff enter this room several times forcing us to stand up from out table to gain access. At the end maybe it's a nice place we just didn't feel welcome. We will not repeat. Compared to surrounding offer on the same plaza it's bellow...

A comida é aceitável, de qualidade média, mas infelizmente o serviço foi dos piores que já experienciei. Eu e a minha mulher, um casal, fomos colocados numa ponta da esplanada, ao sol, apesar de esta estar praticamente vazia com dezenas de mesas livres. Solicitei mudar para o interior da esplanada, onde havia sombra, e foi-nos recusado com o argumento de que éramos apenas dois e as mesas disponíveis eram para quatro pessoas.

O empregado, visivelmente desagradável e pouco cordial, só acedeu à mudança depois de eu ter dito que me ia embora — mesmo assim, acabámos noutra mesa com pouca sombra. Pouco depois, dois senhores chegaram e foram colocados precisamente numa das mesas que eu tinha sugerido e que nos tinham negado. Foi difícil não interpretar essa atitude como pura discriminação.

No final da refeição, questionei o empregado sobre o sucedido. Não respondeu e virou-me as costas, atitude que considero inaceitável em qualquer estabelecimento que preze pelo mínimo de profissionalismo.

A qualidade média dos pratos não justifica, de forma alguma, o mau trato e a falta de respeito. Não tencionamos voltar.

The food is acceptable, of average quality, but unfortunately the service was among the worst I’ve ever experienced. My wife and I, just a couple, were seated at the edge of the terrace in indirect sunlight, despite the area being nearly empty with dozens of available tables.

I asked to move further inside the terrace, where there was shade, but the request was denied with the excuse that we were only two people and the tables were meant for four.

The waiter, who was visibly unpleasant and unfriendly, only agreed to let us move after I said we were going to leave — and even then, the new table was not in a real shadow. Shortly after, two gentlemen arrived and were seated at one of the shaded tables I had originally asked for and was denied. It was hard not to interpret this as pure discrimination.

At the end of the meal, I asked the waiter why we were treated differently. He didn’t respond and simply turned his back on me — a completely unacceptable attitude in any establishment that claims to value its customers.

The average quality of the food does not make up for such poor and disrespectful service. We won’t be...
