I persuaded our host to try out a new local restaurant near to him after seeing this venue on gglmps nearby.
He was reluctant but his favourite Nepalese restaurant was temporarily closed nearby. We three had just arrived in Lisbon and were tired after a very early start so this place was convenient. I checked it out after a shopping trip and it seemed very small, basic and only a pastry shop/cafe but with a proper food menu outside.
Despite this I persuaded my friends by text that this was a potentially good place.
We all arrived later in the Wednesday evening and were guided to the back where there was a large busy proper restaurant with mainly locals
Two young waiters showed us to a corner table already adorned with bread, fine ham and two bottles of wine! As veggies we were not interested in the wine and assumed it would be charged accordingly along with the snack.
We ordered some typical main course, beef and clams, and whole fish.
We had a taste of the red house wine which was very good so ordered a whole litre.
We sent the bread and ham back to the kitchen thinking it would be an expensive error.
The food came in good time and our whole fish (sea bream, dorrado, and two mackerel with a tasty sauce) were nicely grilled with simple boiled potato and broccoli. Our host said his pork and clam (typical local dish) was undermarinated and overcooked swimming in oil (he’s a very picky Frenchman!). We finished his baked potato chunks in oil and garlic which were delicious.
Another half litre of white wine was required to help wash the food down including a dessert I ordered which nicely rounded off the meal.
We also had some fizzy water between us. It turned out the bread and ham were only €1.50 (for the table or each we were not sure).
Service was attentive and excellent with the young waiter appreciating my (bad) jokes.
We left very happy and our host was impressed that we, as his house guests, had introduced him to a new local restaurant (he usually eats out every day) which he would introduce others to.
The bill was €55 which was outstanding (later in our stay we saw mostly at least half the price again elsewhere).
We paid by card and left happy only for me to remember we had not left a tip! Our host said that tipping was not expected but the American/Californian influx has encouraged tipping lately, even in bars AT the bar!
At a dinner party at our hosts his local friends already knew the restaurant and were regulars as it was so good and frequented by locals mostly.

Read moreHard to find a genuine Portuguese restaurant in Lisbon for a first time tourist. Most restraunts in the center are tourist traps. Medium quality food, higher prices, seats on the sidewalk to take a picture. This one is up the hill, regular neighborhood. High quality food, lower prices. Real ambience. I had Portuguese steak , it was delicious and affordable. I enjoyed walking the streets to the restraunt and looking at all the unique tiles on every apartment. Do not miss this place if you have time to get away from the...
