Café Oceano — Restaurant in Peniche

I went to this cafe and, like two other cafes in the area before I even sat down, I inquired if they accepted American Express as payment because I could only use American Express as payment for my meal/coffee. The woman, with utmost confidence, affirmed that their cafe accepted American Express as payment.

I had my meal, it was alright. One of the waiters kept bumping into me, but that is for another review.

I went to pay the check and my Amex was not seen by their machine. It was not declined; my card was never declined. In Europe, typically Amex machines are different than machines used by VISA/MC, but they only had one machine. Numerous times, an attempt was made to run my Amex without it going through. I contacted Amex and there is zero notice from them any attempt was made for purchase from Cafe Oceano in Peniche, PT. The woman who first told me "we accept American Express, yes..." then asked, "can you pay some other way?" and the lights went off in my head: this was a scam from the start. She said yes knowing as an American I have money, of course I have money, and she said yes knowing she was lying but knowing I would have an alternative mode of payment, but I refused. She also said, "your card is denied...", but this, too, was a lie. The machine was asking for a PIN, as if to engage a debit card transaction, but I do not have a PIN on my Amex. I gave her another Amex to run to prove a point against her saying, "we never have issues taking American Express cards, this is an issue with your card...", and she ran it with the exact same result... SCAM. Now, there was no way I was going to pay with another form of payment.

I refused to give another form of payment and I needed to use the first Amex for good reason: my accounting requires use of that first American Express card. It has been very difficult to find restaurants except those associated with hotels to find places to eat in Portugal. She went to the owner, who immediately began yelling at me. I yelled back. He ignored the fact that what appeared to be his manager cleared my use of Amex from the start, and this was a scam from the start. They called the police, and the police did not force me to pay with my other forms of payment. They listened to all sides and I believe they had heard this story before and knew this Cafe scams tourists.

This Cafe serves mediocre food at best at fair prices. But if they are going to go out of their way to misrepresent and then become hostile to the point of calling the police and one's fate depends on which police are on duty at that moment, do you really want to go to a place like this to eat? How many tourist scams do they employ? Is it just this one or do they have others? This owner would not stop yelling expletives at me as I walked away and the police had to stop him. Is this how you want to be treated by a cafe...

Because of the predominant location, this is a place where the locals see the world go by and who goes by.

Good icecream and cakes, terrible bifanas, the worst I ever had and not bifanas at all as it was made with sheared meat instead of a piece of meat. The ice cream, which is not served at the table, was apple and cinnamon and tasted of apple pie, very nice. And the shrimp rissoles were really good too.

As a central and busy place more should be invested on customer service for sure. It was mediocre at best, maybe that reflects their pay? It is a shame as it’s reflects bad on Peniche and...

Não recomendo o serviço , só meti a estrela porque não dá para por sem porque se não nem uma estrela valia a pena, cheguei a cafeteria e geladeira as onze horas da noite as pessoas que estavam comigo pediram café e eu perguntei se faziam crepes o rapaz que nos atendeu disse que já não sabia que o perguntar tive por volta de 5 minutos à espera passando um minuto mais ou menos veio uma rapariga nos trazer um copo de água porque o rapaz que nos trouxe o café esqueceu se do copo de água que tínhamos pedido e da resposta que nos tinha que dar , entretanto a rapariga foi ver se faziam o crepe também não apareceu para disser alguma coisa , as 23:10 o meu marido foi perguntar porque ninguém nos vinha dar resposta , disseram que não faziam , eu com a minha máxima educação foi perguntar se fazia até que horas disseram que era até as 23:15 e quando fui lá ainda faltava 3 minutos para a hora que disseram , quando me estava para ir embora meu marido foi a casa de banho e viu uma pessoa a pedir um crepe e comentou comigo eras 23.30 de quando foi lá dentro e estavam a começar a fazer o crepe isto é uma vergonha não recomendo nada está geladeira e por mais a simpatia e a confusão do trabalho dos empregados não é a mais agradável , isto só foi a crítica so para não pedir o livro de...
