My partner, our friend, and I arrived in the quiet Douro Valley for the first time. It was later in the day and noticed many of the local restaurants either overflowing with people or closed maybe shutdown due to Covid. We stumbled upon Adega Guimarães at the end of a cobblestone path that hardly was even dim. The stars would’ve been better lighting if the clouds hadn’t rolled in. At the end of this path, we could hear chatter, and the rich aromas of smoke and roasted meats. Finally a little ways in, an awning with a coffee ad appeared in the shadows. Upon entering an almost immediate waft of dense, almost thick air hits you. Followed by the volume of local futbol network. The large dining area had dim lights, no windows, and one waiter for the entire place. Aside from the loud tv, the silence of a couple locals enjoying their meals and the clanking of dinnerware made it comforting. We don’t speak Portuguese and the staff spoke very little English but we all had smiles while trying to figure out what we wanted. It was a chilly, rainy day and the soup brought me back to life.
