O Buraquinho Do Freixo — Restaurant in Porto

This is the kind of hole in the wall that I would probably not venture into, especially as a solo female traveler, without the benefit of other Google reviews. So let me do you a favor and say if you are coming in by train or bus, and you want a genuine local experience at a price that is hands down the best meal value I’ve had anywhere in Europe, don’t be put off by appearances. Full of local very colorful regulars when I came in for lunch, the proprietors dote on their customers including the elderly and disabled, plus they eat their own cooking. Everyone was kind and friendly (Portuguese only). Daily menu 8.25 € gets you soup, jug of wine, bread, huge plate of no frills meat or fish with rice and potatoes etc, plus dessert and coffee. And WiFi. It’s all delicious. I got the meat and it was two generous thick slices of tender well seasoned roast pork, which appeared immediately. My vegetable soup appeared after the main course (I think because a fresh pot was cooking). Several dessert choices, at this point my language skills met their limit so I just nodded and a layered tort appeared, a cookies soaked in whipped cream type thing, inhaled it. We were staying close to this adorable spot and while we couldn’t decipher all of the menu, we wanted to try something less touristy, and more local. So glad we did. We could only understand a few words on the menu and from the owner (who was so kind and patient with us) and were so happy with our delicious dinner. It’s almost always a good idea to get out of your comfort zone and visit a place the locals seem to like. The dinner, bread, wine, dessert for only $7.50 euros per person is unbeatable.
