Tip for tourists : don't assume they only sell what you see. Madeiran people like me like to ask for an Omelette sandwich or chicken sandwich. They do different versions of chicken sandwiches and they cost less than 3 euros! You can choose any type of bread e. G multiseed bread, or even bolo do caco bread and ask to be filled with chicken breast and salad. Or chicken mayo salad filling (comes with shredded chicken, carrot, cabbage, mayo and bacon /ham pieces) see attached pictures. I also bought madeiran cane sugar cookies (traditional cookies from Madeira) to take to my colleagues / friends that live in the UK. Cheaper than supermarkets and big pack of cookies. Best price I found to buy these traditional cookies only 2.50 euros per bag. Delicious cakes and such a great variety. Try the Venezuelan empanadas (half moon shape see picture - Empanadas with Corn Dough are gluten free and a delicious snack which can be eaten any day. They can be filled with a variety of fillings from ham/cheese, ground meat, shredded beef or shredded chicken, etc. ) they cost 1, 20 euros only. If you don't drink coffee you can ask for a '' Carioca de limão '' is a lemon tea only 0,55 euros for the small size. Staff are very friendly and they know how to work in this busy environment. They have homemade cakes such as pineapple cake, honey and Walnuts cake, Chocolate and Philadelphia Cake, Marble cake, etc. Big Pastéis...
Read moreWe try different sweet that we didn't even knew the name or what it was at first, but it was really good ! Two type of torroes de açucar : one with nuts and the other maybe vanilla. The cake was really close to the bolo de mel but a lot more soft and delicious. The pasteis de nata was very good too. You need to pay by cash and as seen in the pictures, for the torroes de açucar you pay the same price even if it's not a full cube (I was quite surprised when the lady chose one like that but the communication was already difficult so I couldn't say a thing). The price are really low so nothing to complain. With the 4 sweets and a drink we payed around 6€ (which is the price of one piece of cake in most of other places). We initially planned to visit Sao Vicente but the main road was under work, so we just ate...
