Great traditional Portuguese restaurant with a modern touch.
It was recommended by a Portuguese friend as this restaurant has been run by a family for three generations, and we weren't disappointed as we came back another day during our holidays in Sesimbra.
It is a very cosy place and I would recommend it as a couple, with friends, or as a family reunion ... It has a great atmosphere and as soon as you walk in you can feel the attention to detail that they have put in it (nice ceramic plates, pots, cutlery, glasses) and how friendly and welcoming the staff is.
Food is fresh and based in traditional Portuguese dishes with a modern twist, and it is cooked when the order is placed.
They also have a great local wine selection and the owner is very attentive and helpful with any questions that you might have about food or wine.
You need to book in advance as it seems is always very popular with locals and regular customers, which doesn't...
Read moreThis is an awesome place! Starting from the incredibly wonderful, polite and friendly staff and ending with insanely delicious food 😍😋
We came with my boyfriend several times at first on our own, then we came with relatives, then with friends. For us, this place is special! An important event, a birthday or “switching” your head from problems – we go to Casa Mateus.
1000% recommend this place to anyone who wants to have a delicious meal and have a great overall experience! Our favorites: olives, butter and bread; grilled cheese; different types of clams (depending on what is available) in garlic sauce (and then get this sauce wet with bread 🤤); as a main dish - grilled octopus; dessert - strawberry basil mousse and banana chocolate cake. All this under rose wine ✨
A separate recommendation from me – is to leave a tip, because the team is really just wonderful! And they are very shy when you leave a tip....
Read moreCasa Mateus is exceptional. I don’t think it would be an exaggeration to say it is perhaps the best restaurant in Sesimbra. The food is mind-blowingly good. We had the oysters, goats cheese, bread and olives and an ox tail croquette to start which were beautiful, followed by the polvo assado and the swordfish. The octopus was exquisitely tender and by far the best we’ve had in Portugal! The swordfish was recommended to me by the waiter because it was fresh in that day. He was right to recommend it because it was cooked so well, it was delicate and almost unrecognisable compared to some swordfish I’ve tried in the past. The staff were unbelievably attentive and friendly, we felt so well looked after and could see all the tables were receiving the same treatment. It’s a small restaurant and always seems to be fully booked, so make sure you reserve a table a couple of...
