The owner had shut the kitchen and I went over a couple of times to ask when he was next open over the next few days. Came on and sat down planning on having a drink now and then come back tomorrow. He took pity on my ineptitude and sorted me and my wife with what can only be described as some of the best seafood I've had.
The feiojada de choco and arroz de pulvo were incredible. The amount and freshness of the seafood was fantastic. The flavour was great. Each dish could feed 2 people! Frankly insanely good quality and quantity of food. Value is excellent.
The owner was fantastic. You can tell he loves dealing with people. Was great with a disabled chap and his family when I was there. He was working so hard was like watching a hummingbird on Red Bull. When he was turning people away after as the kitchen had properly shut and there was no way to accommodate them. I felt bad as he had very kindly squeezed me and my wife in.
You need to eat here if you're in the area. He's generally open 12-4, closed on Tuesdays. Place is generally packed telling you how good it is. If I had missed out eating here knowing what I know, would be properly gutted. This is what Portuguese seafood/cuisine in a beach/seaside town is...
Read moreI hope I'm reviewing the right place because the sign said "Sal&Xixa" and I think it's new owners? My family traveled Portugal over Christmas from Canada and our time spent at this restaurant is our favourite memory. Thank you Raphael for your incredible hospitality! We stumbled on this place on our first night and it was so good we had to come back for our last night in town. On both occasions the staff made sure we experienced everything Portugal has to offer, from the food to the drink to the hospitality. They obviously care so much about providing the best food and experience to their guests and made us feel at home. The steak was delicious, I tried chicken kidneys for the first time and was amazed how good it was, the fries were better than McDonalds (and that's high praise from me). But above all, the homemade piri piri sauce stole the show. I can't recommend this place enough whether you're staying in Praia das Maçãs or if it's a reason to go visit. I hope to...
Read moreGreat restaurant with professional service!
It is often hard to find decent food at 15:00, but this time, we lucked out in Praia das Maças.
We chose two of the specials; the fish rice with gambas - delicious! And the meatballs with tomato sauce are very good too. (Can't be better than fish rice, though).
Great beach atmosphere, and we saw the historical tram coming in and out.
What impressed me as much as the food was the professional service. The male server seemed to be very experienced. You know good service when you get it, e.g. when he moves the sign with the specials from the roadside to the table so that we can read it better. When he packed in our leftovers, he made sure that the fish rice and the potato wedges are packed separately, and the wedges he packed in paper, which is the only way they don't get saugy.
Good job, and...
