Real Cervejaria — Restaurant in Vila Nova de Gaia

I was extremely disappointed with my experience at this restaurant. When we arrived, the place was nearly empty, but it quickly filled up as people came to watch a soccer game. Despite the influx of customers, we waited for over an hour without receiving our food. I approached the waiter to inquire about our order, and he admitted that it had been lost while he was on his dinner break. What a ridiculous response! I told him to forget our order as we were leaving. He apologized profusely and assured us that our food would be out immediately. Reluctantly, we decided to wait a bit longer.

When the food finally arrived, my daughter's vegetarian dish, which the waiter had recommended, came with fish mixed in. We complained again, and they replaced it with the correct dish. We were willing to overlook the delays and mistakes until the bill came.

I specifically asked to be billed in euros, not dollars. However, the bill printed out with both currencies, and the waiter assured me it would be charged in euros which has a better transaction rate. To my frustration, I was charged in dollars, incurring an additional transaction fee and a +5% surcharge. When I called the restaurant to complain, the manager offered little in terms of resolution or credit.

I had some hope here because the atmosphere looked bright but service was poor - the waitress was rude & almost got offended or something when I said I'd share a dish with my son. It took a long time for our food orders to come out & the restaurant wasn't busy. And she got our food order wrong, even though I pointed out what to order from the menu. We ordered a burger but instead brought us a bloody steak, which was way more expensive. (And they didn't ask how I wanted the steak cooked.) My son & I didn't bother sending it back because we were starving & hadn't eaten dinner yet. I had the pleasure of coming to this restaurant on multiple occasions during my vacation and every single time I was not disappointed. Even during the busyness of Sao Joao their warm hospitality was still offered to us and our meal was still prepared delicately. Every meal we had was delicious. Whether it was their vegetarian Francesinha, their Bacalhau, or their Steaks, there was always full attention to quality.
