I grew up in Dartmouth on Tim's coffee, but I've been living in Australia +25 years now, a country with prominent Greek and Italian communities. It took some getting used to espresso all the time. I am now a full time convert, especially of being able to enjoy a strong and flavourful coffee without needing sugar or cream to hide bitterness or bad flavours.
Back to visit family I'm here over a week. In that time I've experienced coffee that smells like an old ashtray, beans so over roasted they're burnt, espresso machines dialed up so high the coffee is scalded, filter drip that's been left to sit and scorch for hours, bitter flavours and worse smells. No wonder I used to need all that sugar and cream in my coffee.
I remembered the Second Cup from back when they were in Mic Mac mall and on Spring Garden Rd, so I was a little agitated and desperate when I found them and visited at Dartmouth Crossing. I explained what I wanted and they nodded confidently, "We've got this".
Boy, did they ever.
The best coffee I've had in two weeks, including several places with a familiar green logo.
As far as I'm concerned, if you truly care about being able to enjoy your coffee, there is no other location in greater Halifax/Dartmouth I've found that...
Read moreToday, me and my friends and I came here in the afternoon. The front door had a paper on it, which said " closed at 2pm ". After reading that we went it because we saw people coming out from it WITH COFFEE!!!!. After going in , we saw people there working. It was still 1.57, and we had the right to order. My friend went to the cashier to order, but he declined, saying we are closing at 2 pm. We were shocked to hear that they refused to take our order since they did serve to other customers. I believe that happened with us because me and my friends and I are not from this country. This racist behavior should not be acceptable. Any immigration who is seeing this should understand that there might be a chance that they will do the same to you. There are so many restaurants/fast food places that take your order before closing time. I myself am a food service worker. I can understand that taking orders at the last moment can be frustrating. But you also need to remember that you are someone who is representing the brand, which in this case was the second cup. Now I don't remember who the guy was, but I remember that it happened in the second cup. For me, the reputation of this brand has gone low. I will not come back here again, and...
Read moreOverzealous use of AC no longer a problem: comfortable temperatures now ensured by just opening doors to allow airflow on warm days. Great staff at this location: friendly, good at making coffee, and adept at choosing interesting cafe-friendly music. Lots of electrical outlets make it a convenient place to chill and get work done, except that the internet randomly drops out for 10-20 seconds a few times an hour. Not a huge issue but coupled with the fact that you have to click a thing to reconnect every hour it gets pretty annoying.
They have some tasty black bean wraps; although they are available in limited quantity, I've never been told not to bring in food from the place next door. The other remaining issue with this place now is that the dishwasher has apparently been out of order for like 2 years so they serve everything in...
