I stopped in for an early dinner with the curiosity to try something new. Upon entry, I sensed the authenticity of African traditions in the room and artwork on the walls.
I tried the seafood soup that consisted of mussels, shrimp and yellow fish that was quite tasty. My main dish was the combination of meats - Springbok (antelope), Kudu (antelope) and Ostrich (large flyless bird) that were all grilled. I was impressed with the meal in particular the meats because it was tender and flavourful. I was worried the dear-like meat taste and I must compliment the chef for the superb work to prepare these specialised meats. I’ve never tasted of these kinds and coming from the U.S, these are unknown meats and to many, most likely would never wish to try. I wanted to partake in this to change that narrative to appreciate and show respect to South African culture by trying a local delicacy. Overall, I am pleased and would recommend!
Upon leaving I was checking out the pictures of past diners and there was a photo of Solange (Beyoncé’s sister) who dined at Marco’s! I was pleased to see that and after my dining experience, I can see why so many are drawn to...
Read moreA good evening out with large group of visiting friends from out of the country. Lovely atmosphere with the music. Music was very loud and so was our group. Not happy with the waitress telling us to keep the noise down yet I can hardly hear what someone next to me is saying. But I do feel like this comment was biased by our 1 waitress who was not necessarily the friendliest when ask questions. I like engaging waitresses/ waiters. It was my first time there and I am black and not South African had to go through the menu not knowing what was what. The table next to us, a different racial demographic and their group large but not as large as ours had 2 waitresses who very happily went through the specials board...no-one went through the specials board when we arrived, we were told to quickly order since the other half of our table had already ordered. Great food and great atmosphere but work on your service…managed to try dishes from different friends. Personally the oxtails were the best. Goat, lamb were good. I was not a fan of...
Read moreWe love Marcos place. The vibe is great and with the lovely band you will be entertained while eating.
If you really want to try traditional African style food, you will have to be daring and experimental.
We kicked it off with sheep kidneys and hearts as well as Ostrich, Crocodile and Kudu Carpaccio. The former might not be for everyone.
You have to Order Umqombothi with your food - taste the traditional African maize beer. It’s worth a try.
For the mains we had uLwimi (cow tongue) and umleqwa (locally small scale farmed chicken) with Pap and uMqusho (Samp & Beans). The chicken is probably the best choice for the less experimental guests. Also the Pan African Platter would be a good introduction to African game meat, and probably something that requires a less experimental eate.
We paired our meals with the Bushmanspad Malbec 2019. Excellent full-bodied red wine.
Noteworthy is the umbako pot bread you get as a taster as well as the mandatory malva pudding desert - a South African standard that you...
