"Good food takes time" is supposed to be the difference between fast food and the so-called "Slow food" eateries.

There are also quite a few eateries in the Walmer area but very few restaurants. The word "restaurant" comes from the French verb :restaurer" which means "to restore or refresh". Unfortunately some of the so-called restaurants in Walmer are stuffy, some with music blaring as if you are in a taxi and others just not worthy of the title. Some of these places I will not visit after a long day at work. I will just not feel energized, restored or refreshed.

Then there are the three aspects that make for a good restaurant: ambience, good food and service. Does Angelo's deserve to be called a restaurant? Well let me give you humble opinion.

My partner and I visited Angelo's on a rather busy Friday evening. We were welcomed by a very enthusiastic car guard. He showed my partner where to park but, being a lady, she decided to park somewhere else. The reception from the ladies at the entrance was friendly and warm. We chose to sit at a table at the window because it was quite hot.

Our waiter arrived to take our drink orders. We were looking forward to having a couple of Castle Lite draught beers but unfortunately there were none available. We then settled for Castle Lites (R37 each) and had one more refill each. I also had a Coke (R29) and she asked for a glass of tap water. She was told that tap water was not available. I do not know what the reason was for tap water being unavailable. Maybe they are still playing it safe after the e-colli scare of a few weeks ago or maybe they just do not trust the mayor of our beloved Nelson Mandela Bay? Whatever the reason, my partner then decided to go for a still water (R29). She finished her meal off with a cappuccino (R34).

We placed our order. I opted for the Chicken and Prawn Curry (as per the menu) with spicy rice and creamed spinach (R129). My partner was very predictable and went for the Chicken Schnitzel with chips and onion rings (R99).

From the time that we placed our order until the time the food arrived at the table seemed like an eternity. The wait was very long! But was it worth it? The answer is a very simple YES. The portions were huge. My chicken and prawn curry turned out to be a chicken and shrimp curry. It may have read "prawns" on the box and some people may think that prawns and shrimps are the same but they are very different. It was, however, billed as Chicken and Shrimp Curry on the invoice. It was very good and the creamed spinach was out of this world. I enjoyed the curry and spinach so much that I forgot to have my rice. Please just don't tell my mother that. My partner gave me a sample of her onion rings and chicken schnitzel. It was a good portion of fresh chicken fillet and not the normal pre-ordered schnitzel that you just need to stick in the oven or the microwave. Even I can do that, providing that I read the instructions carefully.

The service was good without being intrusive. The food was excellent. So what about the ambience? I like the décor and the space between the tables. It is not over killed with paintings and stuff hanging or placed all over the show. I did find that the lighting was a bit on the bright side. I would suggest that you think about installing dimmers and I would prefer candles on the tables to add to a more romantic experience. After all it was a Friday night and who knows what may happen it you set the mood.....

The menu prices are very reasonable for what you get and the food is really good. The bar prices, on the other hand, I find to be a bit pricey. The bill, including a well deserved tip, came to R520.

In the words of Arnold Schwarzenegger:...

Visited on a Thursday night (last night). The only redeeming qualities that I can write about the newly-opened Angelos is the very friendly & helpful car attendant and the friendly greeting by the hosts at the door. Besides those two factors - we experienced our waitron not bringing one of the drinks we had ordered - she clean forgot. Not knowing what the of pasta the restaurant serves with their pasta dishes. Bad advice on portion size - when I asked the size of the half portion of pasta she said "too small, you will finish it easily". Which was information I didn't particularly appreciate - I wanted a more visual size reference rather than opinion. (spoiler alert: I ended up taking half the full portion home because it was too much). When placing our order - we were told they do not have "rustic cut chips with spice" only the "rustic cut chips". Which isn't too much of a train smash- completely understandable with them being open for 2 months. When my pasta arrived (after a very long wait) I was told they don't have Parmesan for the top of the pasta. Ok fine. Can't do anything about it. I asked for garlic and chilli. She returns with crushed chillies and states they don't have any crushed garlic. Now I'm frustrated. The pasta I ate was mediocre at best- lacked salt as the basis and any other sort of flavour too. Asked for the bill - which (big shocker) the waitress also stated "sorry we don't have sweets either". Not that they're important but at this point it was laughable how many times we had heard that this evening. Returned home only to discover my take-away pasta had a piece of plastic in it from a packaging that something in the pasta must've been in. Overall - not in a...

Angelo's is an institution, they have been around for over 15 years. Originally located on parliament Street in town Angelo's rose to popularity for serving great food at reasonable prices. Angelo's was always full, no matter what time you went there they were constantly busy, it was hard to get a table. After parliament Street decreased in popularity as a result of urban sprawl making the area unsafe Angelo's moved to Walmer. The new premises was bigger and trendier, but the vibe was the same. The food remained good and cheap, their drinks were still the cheapest in town and the menu stayed the same, sticking with old favorites like the sherry chicken pasta or the chicken curry baked potato and the flavors hadn't changed. As popular as ever this is a restaurant I'd recommend to anyone and I give it 4 out of 5 as I remember it with...

This upmarket cafe has an open, breezy vibe, mix of classy and homey. Nice use of the space , indoor and outdoor seating available. Quite a bit of seating if you're looking for a space for a large number of guests . The menu has quite vegetarian options . Some dishes have an option for half portions if you're wanting to try a bit of everything or have a smaller appetite. The service was great, efficient, polite , tentative server. Overall good experience.

Angelos in Walmer is a fantastic spot! They offer a great selection of drinks, especially their mocktails, which are a must-try. The food menu is diverse, catering to a variety of tastes. The staff are friendly and attentive, adding to the welcoming atmosphere. The restaurant itself is spacious and comfortable, making it a great choice for both casual outings and special occasions. Highly recommended!
