This cafe is popular for a reason - it serves wholesome food for fair prices and best of all it has one of the best coffees in town (decent coffee is as rare as a 6 carat diamond in Joburg)! I am lucky to live a 4 to 5 minute walk from this gem so I have my breakfast here almost every morning. Because I don't eat eggs that are non free range and non organic I decline to order 90% of the breakfast dishes as they all include eggs. Thankfully the kitchen is always ready to prepare the delicious lunch items. The salads are fantastic and bread is very good (best when piping hot between 8 -9 am). That they give water to the dogs in the outdoor seating area is wonderful and so the whole place has a lovely vibe. It was amusing to read some of the reviewers complaining about slow service. Oh well this is South Africa, not Zurich or Singapore and the serving staff typically gets 10% in tips and little else so what do people expect that they also sing and dance for them?! I find them to be all friendly and helpful if somewhat nonchalant at times (ie when they forget to ask if you want a ginger shot in your juice and you find out when it is too late) but this is expected on the continent and at least they don't mix the orders as is typically the case in other cafes around town. The only downside is some of the cakes which are flops (too sweet and often a day or even day and half beyond their expiry date like the ghastly lemon meringue cake) but this I find is the case everywhere in town. I suppose it is because most of the clientele wants to desperately relive 1975 or 1980 and always have spectacles of plenty in front of their eyes. As my grandmother always said (she wasn't nearly as well educated as the whingers commenting here but she had a lot of healthy common sense - 'you can't eat the cake and...
Read moreEDIT: I would like to thank the lovely manager Shantel who took this matter to heart. She asked me the relevant questions and saw to the query promptly. Offered a heartfelt apology. I know how hard the retail industry is, working in retail myself. So I understand the pressure and the hard work it takes to be in the service industry. Once again, thank you Shantel and your lovely staff. We look forward to our next experience at this establishment.
We went for my mother's birthday lunch a couple of weeks ago. Let me start with the positive. The server was incredible, she was attentive, on time, prompt and really took care of us. She deserves a raise or something. Even took the time to speak to my 5 year old son who said she was a very nice lady.
The drinks were excellent, on point and just delicious. That berry iced tea was just amazing and my Cosmo was mixed to perfection.
Now for the negative, the kitchen got my order wrong, which to me isn't a big deal. It happens all the time as my orders are specific, they corrected the mistake but the bun was so greasy and oily it looked unappetizing. The chips were only half cooked with some of them. The party had flavour, but the oilyness turned me off. I only managed to eat about half of it. My husband's food was bland and the veggies had zero taste or texture. The chicken was dry despite the sauce on it.
Dessert was quite good and so was the coffee. I usually have a very positive experience with Dorpio Zero Greenside, so I was disappointed by this latest meal. I hope next time will be that 5 star quality I have come to love from this wonderful...
Read moreI was here earlier this evening for a meal. Arrived around 17h00, and we ordered our meal around 17h45, at which time it was not really busy. We were served by Khanyi.
I was not impressed at all by the level of service she provided. Not friendly at all, She could not muster up a single smile until such time I had to pay the bill.
She seemed to be very picky about which customers she was friendly with, and for me and my niece to raise her attention for any of our needs was as if we were trying to reach for the moon, even when she was in plain sight. Other customers clearly seemed to be getting better service.
I am not a first-timer in this restaurant. This is the place I sually come to when I am around Jhb. I am usually served by Inosenci, yet another waitress that works here. Maybe my bar was set too high as I had become accustomed to how Inosenci treated us so well. However, she was not here on this particular evening, and very regrettably so.
I now doubt as to whether I should bother with this place. I am not a person that usually dines out due to time constraints, but when I do, a basic expectation would be to have a waiter/waitress that is kind, attentive, professiona, friendly,l and fair in his/her treatment of ALL customers. Khanyi failed on every count. Even if the food was actually great.
What is the point of going out for that which was supposed to be a relaxed, and enjoyable meal away from home, when the waitress evokes feelings of anger and...
