We were really excited coming to Japa. I have lived in Japan for some time and love the authentic Japanese cuisine. Unfortunately the food did not live up to the hype.
The menu is gigantic and since we came there for the first time, we were overwhelmed by the amount of food and selections. Getting a basic rundown of the menu and its style of food would have helped. Even me who is familiar with the cuisine struggled with some of the terms. I think for New guests it would be helpful to have someone explain the menu.
We had karage as a starter (fried chicken) and sushi and ramen for mains. The karage was not as tasteful as I remember it in Japan. The dipping sauce helped but the chicken was lacking flavors. The sushi was good but my fiance loves sushi and for her it did not stand out. The ramen was the most disappointing. I ordered a spicy ramen, the broth was completely tasteless and there were no veggies in there besides spring onions. Though lots of meat.
What bothered me the most was the service. It was very slow and inattentive. We were not checked upon despite our glasses being empty and after we finished we had to wait almost 20 min for a server to come by and pay.
Overall the food is certainly not bad but for the price I have surely expected something better and more authentic. We would...
Read moreThis is hands down the best place for Japanese food in Johannesburg. Everything for sushi to udon. The food is phenomenal. It is pricey, with a starter, green tea and a good amount of sushi you'll approach the R300 mark. But it's so worth it. Can't go wrong on the menu as it is all tasty. It's worth the trip and the hole in your wallet. Make sure to try the tamago (like a Japanese omelette often served with the sushi platters) you've probably had it before at other restaurants but here it's amazing. Also there is always some complimentary dish, either a small starter or a dessert which I think is lovely touch. The restaurant can be a little tricky to find, it's in the first floor (floor above ground floor) and it looks very unassuming from the outside. On my first visit I had to call the restaurant to get directions for the last 200m because I parked in the...
Read moreNot sure how this place is highly rated. I came here with friends on a Saturday night and it was busy. We ordered our food, mostly ramen. After 40 minutes of waiting only to be told that they don't have ramen anymore because they were finished. Had the ramen replaced with somen but it's disappointed that they came to us after 40 minutes to inform us the news. Anyways, ramen came with no egg as shown in the pictures, no spoon for the soup, and the chilli on the table were empty. The quality of the food is actually good, but just an unsatisfied meal, experience and paid a lot of money for it. If you can't accommodate a full house then don't open such a big restaurant or have better management during...
