Kitfo
The finest, fat-free cut of beef, carefully tenderised into a tartare flavoured with traditional ethiopian butter, herbs and spices. Kitfo can be served cooked or raw - the traditional way. The stunning aroma of butter and herbs has been called the essence of addis ababa.
Doro Wet
Tender chicken pieces slowly cooked in a spicy herbed onion gravy. Doro wet is served with traditional cheese, and a boiled egg. Doro wet is the food of all the festivals - and is typically eaten to break the fast. No christmas, new year, epiphany or eid is complete without a tender doro wet served piping hot in a clay pot.

We LOVE Ethiopia and it’s delicious Food.

While Joburg does have a couple of Ethiopian places, I was looking for something open air + safe parking & found that Little Addis had recently moved to @44_stanleyavenue - a location we have visited before (once) &adored!

Hence we headed out on a drizzly Wednesday late noon & were rewarded with the most amazing food!

They offer injeera made from rice too, for those unfamiliar with teff. We love teff (I actually lose weight eating teff injeera) so we didn’t try the rice variant.

We opted for the Mahberawi (120R for 2) & added a plate of beef tibs (80R) which is the plate in the center -which comes with its own portion of injeera.

The Mahberawi for 2 came with 2 drumsticks of chicken dorowat, beef stew yebere key wet, a lamb + mixed vegetable dryish dish, shiro- spicy ground chickpeas, potato dish, Ethiopian greens similar to kale/collard, pumpkin stew, cabbage stir fry, beetroot salad, tomato salad and mitmita - Ethiopian chutney pudi.

This is more than enough quantity for 2 people, but you may need to ask for more injeera. We had the injeera that came with our tibs, so that was enough.

This was an excellently balanced meal in every way - the flavours, variety, veg and protein etc etc. Taste was as good as most places we have eaten in Ethiopia.

Ordered a pot of Ethiopian spiced tea which was a perfect accompaniment to the meal on a cold day.

We also ordered some injeera to carry home - it goes so well with Indian dishes too.

Heartily recommend Little Addis for Ethiopian food. It was worth the 20km-30min drive on a...

I've been here dozens of times, after developing a taste for Ethiopian while I lived in Washington, DC. It's a no-frills experience, and there isn't any teff in the injera, but it is literally my favorite food experience in all of Johannesburg. The owner is friendly, there is always a table (or a plan to be made), and the food is so, so, so good. It's also a fantastic value - you won't find another place with this quality at anywhere near the price. Cannot recommend enough - and our overseas guests rave about it as well.

Can now update after three years of consistently ordering Sunday night vegan platters: there is now often teff in the injira, the food is incredibly consistent, and the quality has only gone up. They're now in a much friendlier location at 44 Stanley. And the prices are incredible. Still one of the best food experiences in all of johannesburg.

Just a refresher - it’s still the best Ethiopian in the country, the prices are great, and it’s like eating at a friends house. I will cry for days if this restaurant ever...

Little Addis Cafe 🇪🇹 was my first introduction to delicious Ethiopian cuisine. The food is simply delicious and served very quickly. I had the vegan Beyaynetu sharing plate which was a half portion.

Their portions sizes are very generous, even a half portion can feed two people, it costs R110 and is 100% worth it. You get a tray with yummy injera and 10 different dishes to pair it with. From yummy chickpeas, potatoes and lentils, to cabbage, spinach and a slightly spicy tomatoe.

By the way, their menu is more than just a menu, it’s full of interesting information related to Ethiopian cuisine and culture and it’s the first time I’ve actually read a menu like I’m reading an informative book.

Definitely try some coffee as well while you’re here, Ethiopians after all are known for their coffee 👍🏽👍🏽

Service was quick and very friendly. If you’ve ever wanted to try Ethiopian food I highly recommend this...

Lovey experience at this small modern Ethiopian place. It may be the best we’ve ever had here or in the US. The spice was perfect. Not too hot and super flavorful. Service was stunningly efficient and the waitress was so kind— my kids raves about the dipping spice that came with our tibs and kifto and she gave us a small to go container with enough for several meals. My daughter already has big plans for trying her own chicken dish! The teff injera was sour and delicious. All the veggies were fabulous especially that greens and cabbage. The only dish I found unusual was the beet salad. Never had that before at an Ethiopian place. The chicken doro wat was outstanding. Best I’ve ever tasted. Lamb tibs were tender and no gristle or fat. Also loved the tomato salad. Just the right amount of jalapeño!
