I must say that the Ocean Basket Sunninghill at Chilli Lane was below my expectations. The food is fresh however the level of service was really a disgrace. I went there with my friend and he had salmon roses to start and I had 6 pieces of salmon sashimi to start and then we both had grilled salmon with chips. My friends' salmon roses came and I was still waiting for my salmon sashimi. I had to get up to see where it was and the waiters/waitresses were confused as they did not know I had even placed an order for sashimi. Whilst I was up I saw that they were bringing our main course and I sent it back. I said that they had to do the salmon again because it could not be kept standing. The sashimi arrived and it was ok. Then we received our grilled salmon and it was dry. The manageress said that they had made fresh salmon for us but it was like biltong so it was a lie that they had even made a fresh one as I requested. My sashimi order was not put through and because of this no-one knew I had even ordered it. Poor execution in the kitchen and this resulted in a sub standard meal esspecially salmon. We never tipped, never tipped and gave a rating of 2 on Zapper. VERY BAD SERVICE, THEY SAID THAT THERE WAS A MISCONSEPTION AND THEY WANTED TO GIVE US A COMPLIMENTRY DRINK BECAUSE THEY KNEW IT WAS SO DRY. I DID NOT WANT ANOTHER DRINK BUT MY FRIEND HAD A SPRITE BECAUSE HE ALSO FOUND IT TOO DRY TO EAT. Read moreWe visited Ocean Basket at Chili Lane on Wednesday 3rd September 2025, we had requested a table for 8 adults and one child. We placed our order and waited patiently for our meals because it was evident that the restaurant was busy. 5 meals arrived and the other 3 did not. 25 minutes had passed when our waitress Thobile had come back to our table to "confirm" the other 3 orders. Came back with completely different meals and said the kitchen had messed up the order. At this point she was flustered and walked away as we were telling her that what she had brought was not our order. She then came back with one of the correct orders which was ice cold and the other 2 orders were still being 'confirmed'. When we asked her what the actual hold up was she blamed the kitchen but she herself didnt even know the correct order. She spoke to us as if we were inconveniencing her life and made us feel very uncomfortable. No people skills or customer etiquette whatsoever!!! Everyone who had received their meals were already done eating, some had even lost their appetites waiting for us all to eat together. Read moreI will never be back. Terrible food and service. Problem we were told because head office freezes all the food and all food is cooked straight from frozen, not defrosted. Calamari was fried in 5 day old oil. Vegetables were raw.
The biggest thing was the manager, although understanding our issues stated to the defense of the restaurant, that because there was new management now and they have been advertising recently, the establishment couldn't cope with the amount of people. I've been going there for over ten years and although the experience was mediocre at best it certainly wasn't as bad as this was. And certainly no excuse to produce such bad food and poor service. The manager did try to rectify it and gave us a 25 percent discount, but we felt like we should have just got up and walked off.
When I complained to the waitress about my vegetables, that I paid extra for, being raw she stood there and patronized me by explaining I ordered grilled and that's how it comes so tough luck.
So I dont foresee this brand lasting long. I wouldn't even be surprised if the health department came knocking. I dont trust them, their cooking methods or head office. It's a dying brand.
