A Celebration of life, Friendship and good food.
We joined Wenchy in celebrating her birthday breakfast at Truffles Bistro, and it was soo good to spend it with her. Truffles is situated at Mushroom park, (for those that don’t know it’s where the Hyundai balloon use to be opposite the Radisson Sandton Hotel.), and that was inspiration for their name. We sat alongside the living wall (with approx. 296 individual plants) with all the numerous plants adorned with bottles of Strongbow ciders before being treated to a fantastic breakfast. First up – bubbles and lots of it i.e. Boschendal Brut Bubbles to be exact as well as an English Cucumber at our seats ( will chat about that later) If you didn’t know, Truffles is now open for Breakfast as well since the 1st June, and it seems to be a winner judging from how full the space was. We got to indulge in the following
Chia seed breakfast - Coconut Milk soaked Chia Seeds, Blueberry compote, with shaved coconut, and toasted Pumpkin seeds
Salmon Scramble - scrambled eggs, smoked Atlantic Salmon, dill cream cheese, semi dried tomatoes and spring onion emulsion.
Mushrooms on Toast – grilled exotic mushrooms with parsley & Garlic, and Avo
A pile o’pancakes – fluffy American pancakes, maple syrup, Chantilly cream and marshmallow fluff.
Truffles Benedict – poached eggs, pulled glazed shortrib, black truffle Hollandaise, served on an English muffin.
Thereafter we got tucked into dessert which is the delicious Peppermint cake from Café Patisse. Wow, we had a proper treat today, the cake was delicious, and the flavour wasn't over powering. And last but NOT least, we could NOT leave without trying the Twice fried Truffle Fries with Truffle Aioli. AMAZING it’s a must try. Although we were celebrating the life of our fabulous Wenchy, we each got gifted a gorgeous AND personalized mug from her @african hips merchandise. How lucky can a person get. If you also want a mug or maybe even some tshirts, check out her page.
Not forgetting it was also #WorldGinDay, so with Cucumber in hand, we headed to the bar to exchange it for a Hendricks G&T with some Strongbow Apple Ale. Refreshing and different which might not be to everyones taste.
As for great breakfast spot with outdoor seating, as well as a play area for the kiddies, this is definitely a new option to soak in some...
Read moreAn Unbelievably Ridiculous Experience—Avoid Truffles on the Park if You Value Your Time and Sanity
Visiting Johannesburg from Copenhagen, I chose Truffles on the Park in Sandton for a celebratory brunch with friends, expecting high standards and professional service. Instead, I found myself trapped in a surreal and bizarre days-long nightmare over a minor bill. Here’s a rundown of the circus:
After their own card system repeatedly failed, the manager, Brighton, blamed my Visa card (yes, an international Visa card that works everywhere else) and then suggested coming to my home to “resolve” the matter. Super creepy and invasive. He then suggested I pay via Dineplan once I was back at my hotel, which seemed like a great idea. Before I could make it back home, I had already received a dramatic email from him claiming he’d paid my bill “from his own pocket” and that, now, because of me, his family would go without food for two weeks. If that doesn’t scream “professional service,” I don’t know what does.
When I escalated the issue to one of the owners, Trevor Latimer, wanting to know how to settle my bill and thinking sanity might prevail, I was met with another level of absurdity. Rather than a quick resolution, Trevor doubled down with excuses, claiming “Visa was down across the country” and treating me like I was some kind of flight risk over a trivial bill that I was actively trying to settle. Three days of my holiday were wasted chasing them down, while fielding more and more insulting insinuations, questioning my integrity the entire time.
I finally succeeded in making an international transfer to settle the amount, but just want to say that for anyone considering Truffles, especially as an international guest, be warned: This establishment seems far more invested in blame-shifting, emotional manipulation, and bizarre drama than in providing any semblance of customer service. If you value your time, sanity, and a dining experience that doesn't treat you as an international fugitive over their technical issues, I strongly recommend...
Read moreI was very excited to finally book a table here as it has been on my list of restaurants to go to however, I was disappointed on entering the place. I will admit, I was 15 minutes late for my booking but with driving around Sandton while load-shedding, you can understand the traffic I went through to get to the place. When I finally got there, the host told me that she had given my table away as I was late. I was not even called to check whether I was still coming (most places do this before giving your table away). I politely explained that several robots were out in the area and this delayed me and my family from arriving on time. I had booked a table inside the restaurant as we had a small baby with us and the winter was at its peak that day. She offered us a table outside, which I politely declined and asked that maybe we can sit by the beach bar. she took us down there and told a waiter to give us a table. I tried to ask her if she would get us if a table was available inside but she just vanished. I spoke to the waiter and explained what happened and he said he would go inside and see if we could move there as sitting with a small baby outside in the cold was not a good idea. we waited for when he returned and he told us that our table was not given away. "Highly" confused, my family and I move back into the restaurant and sit down. Now we waited to be served but the Manager approached our table and told us we had no right sitting here as this table was booked. At this point, I had lost it! I told him how we ended at that table and asked him what we should do... Yep, you guessed right! he said we must go OUTSIDE!!! I firmly told him that I would actually rather leave as this is honestly not how I want to be treated at a restaurant and that is what we did. So disappointed as we had to look for another place around Sandton (with all that load-shedding) to eat! Certainly not going...
