Glenalmond Hotel — Hotel in Gauteng

We stayed one night in late April, our first night ever in Johannesburg and in Africa. We would have stayed a second but had to go to another hotel from which we were leaving on a tour early next morning. Glenalmond feels more like a motel than a hotel in that is has small blocks of discrete apartments set in landscaped grounds with plenty of parking space. Our apartment was light, spacious, clean and well-appointed with a lounge-dining area and full kitchen. It was also good value, and management was helpful, happily storing our luggage safely for a day and calling an Uber for us when we left. However, the apartments are getting a little worn and our stay was marred by a series of small things that reflect insufficient care/maintenance - the electricity kept flipping off (we think related to the aircon as it stopped doing it once we put that off), we couldn’t turn hot water on in shower so had to have a bath which neither of us likes, and the smoke alarm battery was so low it was bipping all night until we removed it.||The hotel is located in Sandton, about 10 minutes walk from the Gautrain station (new, clean, safe, easy to use public transport). Sandton station is on the direct line from the airport and is also one stop from Rosebank, the location of the office and start for the Hop On Hop Off City Sightseeing bus. We found this HOHO bus the easiest way to get safely around the city for international tourists new to the city on a short visit. It also runs a free shuttle between Rosebank and Sandton (stopping at some of the larger hotels, as well as the Gautrain station) in the morning and evening (see their website). This all works well in daylight hours for a stay at Glenalmond, when walking in Sandton is deemed quite safe, but recommendations are not to walk after dark. In autumn it is dark around 6pm and it is difficult to get back from the day's sightseeing by this time. The hotel no longer runs its own shuttle to/from the station, so, while not be an issue for Uber users, for others it is a bit challenging to accomplish the short section from the station to the hotel after dark (we walked it once with no issues, but it is daunting with all the warnings). ||The hotel will organise a pick-up from the airport (cost 600ZAR) but you can easily use the Gautrain if you are prepared for the 10min walk to the hotel. Check in was conducted very well. Staff were professional. Though i arrived before the check in time they managed to arrange a room for me which was a relief as we had a long flight. At first glance one would assume the hotel would have basic rooms but upon entering the room I was amazed by the size of the room. There is a lounge area which allows for privacy when hosting visitors. A private balcony also ensured privacy as well as an opportunity to soak up the sun which one never gets to do in a lot of hotels without balconies. I was having my wedding in Johannesburg and Glenalmond hotel was conveniently located near my home, so i had family members who flew from abroad stay there.||||After the 2nd night, they receive a memo from a team member that the hotel is closing down and that they should leave.||||This was shocking news as it happened right before the wedding.
