Food was ok. Good taste, portions rather skimpy. They come in very small plates. When you order a few of these mini dishes, your entire table will be packed. Eating was a hassle. (This is not a complaint - it's the restaurant's approach to serving - I wouldn't give a bad rating for this).
As expected, they brought one dish after another. It's part of a really horrible practice in many capetonian restaurants where the customer is basically being fed what is ready instead of making the effort of preparing everything at once and serving it according to the order.
We had to threaten them with cancelling the rest of the order to make them do their work.
They eventually forgot to bring one of our dishes. And they made their problems our problems. We had to scratch out the forgotten dish from the bill. (Of course they forget serving, but never the billing. We call that greed.)
Then we were prevented from paying, but the waiter felt he must first confirm with his manager. Almost like I would order and eat without paying. Once again, I had explain to him that he cannot make his problems my problems, and to force him to accept my payment and deal with his own mess later. Then as I was packing my things to leave, he still had the nerves to come out with the manager pellmell to doublecheck, just to end up understanding that I was right and looking at me embarrassed.
We really just wanted a relaxed Sunday lunch at a new favourite Greek place. And the food did the trick. But R900 for this mess - no thanks. We...
Read moreI really wanted to try this new Greek restaurant and when I checked the reviews I was set the food must be great , right !! Unfortunately it was very disappointing . I had the pork belly supposed to be with an "apple foam" and baby carrots . The pork belly was mostly fat , and yes I am aware it is a fatty piece of meat as i have had it numerous times before , but a good chef knows how to render down the fat. The skin was chewy and rubbery and not crisp at all . The dish was served without the apple sauce an i had to request it . My friend had the gyro lamb which is like a massive wrap. The flavor of the sauce on this was delicious big wrap ...little meat. She had a glass of wine ..which was R110 for the glass of red wine . The restaurant itself is very "cold" and with the door being left open a chilled breeze constantly blows in . The waiter was friendly but alittle too much in your personal space .coming towards you an whispering abour another glass of wine wont hurt trying to be amusing but it felt creepy .. the owners husband wife an son were present but unlike previous reviews that stated they walked the tables an greeted everyone , that did not happen , they didn't even smile at the patrons and the restaurant was about 80% full . The prices are steep and for what i paid for the pork belly, i would still suggest klein roosboom as the best pork belly i have had to date . Good luck to this...
Read more4 of us dined at Omilo a few days ago. Service was friendly & efficient. The interior decor is mostly plate glass & bare walls, so it's very "live" & noisy inside: much better to sit outside. We shared an excellent cucumber, olive & feta salad as a starter. My wife had 2 meze dishes (spanokopita & "octopus on coal") which she enjoyed. My friend had the baby chicken which he pronounced tough but tasty. His wife had the chilli prawn dish which she enjoyed. I settled for the moussaka. This was a mixed bag: heavy on the beschamel sauce, nutmeg & sliced potato, but very light on mince & aubergine. It did not look very appealing, being just a big spoonful dumped on the plate, but it was fairly tasty. Several dishes were not available the night we dined there. We tried to order a second bottle of the red wine, but they had run out, so we wound up with a different blend: not serious. In summary not bad, but I've had many moussakas before, all better and cheaper! Our bill, including tip, averaged a little more than R500 each. Finally, beware: their R100 corkage fee is...
