I ordered a dish that came highly recommended—a classic fish and chips meal—and it was absolutely divine. The fish was perfectly cooked with a crispy golden batter that was light and not at all greasy, while the inside was tender, flaky, and bursting with fresh flavour. The chips were just as incredible—crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and seasoned to perfection.

Every bite was a joy, and it’s clear that Kalky’s uses only the freshest ingredients. The portions were generous, leaving me completely satisfied without feeling overwhelmed. What I loved most was how authentic the food felt—it’s hearty, comforting, and exactly what you’d hope for when visiting a place renowned for its seafood.

The atmosphere at Kalky’s was another highlight of my visit. There’s something so charming about the laid-back, welcoming vibe of the place. It’s the kind of spot that makes you want to sit back, relax, and savour your meal while enjoying the lively, friendly energy of the surroundings.

The staff were also fantastic—friendly, attentive, and clearly passionate about ensuring every guest has a great experience. They were quick to take my order, provided helpful recommendations, and checked in to make sure everything was to my liking. It’s always a pleasure to dine somewhere where the team genuinely cares about their customers.

Overall, Kalky’s offers an unbeatable combination of delicious food, a clean and inviting setting, and excellent service. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, this is a must-visit spot that captures the heart and soul of good food and great hospitality. I’ll definitely be back soon to try more of their incredible...

All the hype about this place is overrated!! I have been here today after a couple of years, and all I can say is I give the food a 1/10 and that's because the chips was enjoyable and the prawns was OK but tasteless. We ordered a Kalkys platter as we wanted to try abit of everything.

When looking at their pricing and to order everything separately (prawns, calamari, fish, onion rings, rice and a funny salad) would have costed much more than the R375 we paid for the Kalkys platter.

The salad was laughable white lettuce 2 small pieces of cucumber 2 slivers of watermelon 🤣😅 and red onion and literally 1 slice of tomato. The calamari was rubbery, the Rice is soooo PATHETIC oh my word, I personally would not feed that to a homeless person asking for food.

The Hake was small but dipped in so much batter making it seem like a big piece of fish. The onions rings they bought wreva that's crumbed just did not taste great at all.

The prawns was cleaned atleast and cooked good but had zero flavor on it at all.

This establishment I will not recommend to anyone and not to the tourists my husband drives either as the HYPE is all Nonsense. I have eaten way better and for half the price.P.S I don't mind paying this amount of money but then the food needs to be decent

I might as well have gone to...

I went to Kalkys on Fathersday (2025). I was EXTREMELY disappointed.

In my opinion, Kalkys used to set the tone as far as fisheries are concerned. Great vibe. Ok service. Looong ques, but nobody minded as the product was great. Portions were generous, quality great!!

To my surprise, literally everything was bad. We ordered a snoek parcel and a hake & calamari parcel, plus 4 rolls.

The rolls were not fresh. The chips, for both parcels, were oily, not freshly cooked and the portions were small. The hake smelled fishy, was extremely oily, and the portion was ridiculously small. The snoek looked great. Good portion size. It was bad. Dry. Very dry. Its almost like it was steamed before it was fried. And also very oily. The calamari portion size was ok. Smelled fishy. And overcooked to the point of resembling shoe leather.

I was disappointed to the point of becoming angry, and my wife convinced me not to make a scene, as I was in no mood to be polite. So we left, with most of the food not eaten. We went to a convenience store to buy some pies as we were still hungry.

Never again.

I drove from the northern suburbs with great expectations. Next time I go to Kalkbay Harbour I will walk a wide berth...

A OG seafood spot in Kalk Bay, Cape Town! 🤩🍴 We were so lucky to visit on a random Friday afternoon when it wasn’t too busy. Local is lekker man! We had such delicious and fresh seafood 😍 - The Whole Crayfish & Chips is usually R350, but we visited when there was a special for R150 😮‍💨🦞 - We also ordered the Snoek fish & chips for R105. It was truly the tastiest and freshest I’ve ever had 🐟 I can only imagine how busy it is during peak season. I will definitely be back to this hidden local gem 💎🤩 #zestireviews #capetown #kalkbay #kalkys #seafood #crayfish #snoek #tiktoksouthafrica #capetownfoodie #placestoeatincapetown #restaurantsincapetown #Foodie #mzansitiktok

Finding Kalky’s feels harder than it should be … you have a split-level parking lot (its on the lower level) and it’s off to your hard left where you can’t really see the sign from the parking. Despite that, there’s a constant stream of people, which probably fuels the (by modern standards) curious decision of cash-only upfront ordering at the till (at least the food gets walked around the venue by a waitress calling out the order number - but that’s the extent of the table service). The fish itself is good and pricing more reasonable than other places, but that’s at least partly due to there being only a single hake fillet in the R96 “hake and chips” combo. I went for the more expensive “hake and calamari” combo, but was a bit disappointed that the calamari was just big fried chunks. The hake was crispy and fresh, undoubtedly, but I think there are probably a couple better options if you’re just in town for a couple days and looking for the best fish and chips experience (I recommend looking towards Simon’s Town for that). For the price point Kalky’s is good, honest food done well … don’t expect more and you’ll have a great time.

I was quite eager to try Kalkys after seeing an enticing Instagram post about it, but my experience was a bit disappointing, especially coming all the way from the Northern Suburbs. As a first-time visitor, there are a few things I wish I had known beforehand: The seating is quite disorganized. If the restaurant is busy, finding a place to sit—especially for larger groups—can be a real challenge. I even had someone offer me their table for R50! Kalkys operates on a cash-only basis. While there is an ATM on-site, it's worth noting that these machines typically charge high banking fees. The waiting time can be prolonged, and if you don't have a seat, there's no designated space for waiting. This can lead to inconvenient congestion as people are left standing in the way. Unfortunately, I didn’t quite understand the hype around the food. Perhaps our tastes differ when it comes to fish and chips. Nevertheless, I’m glad I gave it a try, as it offered some valuable insights into the experience. As a side note, while they sell lemon wedges and tartar sauce separately, both are included with your order, which was a nice touch.
