Ohana Cafe

Last week, I had the absolute pleasure of dining at Ohana Cafe in the beautiful coastal setting of Kalk bay. Following my newly adopted healthy habit of a sauna and a cold plunge in the Dalebrook tidal pool, I wondered, could life get any better? And the answer is YES, if you do what I did and have breakfast at this beachy cafe. My friend and I took a slow stroll there while warming up after our dip, to our surprise it was packed! On a Monday! I also think to myself, what on earth do these people do, but then I pause and realise I am there too, so I guess it is possible to work and enjoy the little things in life. Who would have thought. Anyway! There was one table left, so we quickly got seated before the rest of the swimmers got there. We got the perfect spot overlooking the ocean. Pure bliss.

Soon after taking a moment to appreciate the view, our waiter came with menus and took our drink orders. Somehow, it was only 10 AM, and I had already had three coffees, so I opted for a peppermint tea and a ginger shot. Healthy, am I right?

We took a moment to look through the menu. There were a lot of delicious and healthy sounding breakfasts. I felt like something rather substantial after sweating out all of my toxins in the sauna just moments ago. I chose the vegan love, which is sautéed mushrooms, wilted baby spinach, hummus and Ohanamade tomato relish on toast. The not so vegan in me asked to add two soft poached eggs, on sourdough, of course, because why not be trendy?

Our drinks arrived, and we ordered our food. The atmosphere was lively, yet serene and peaceful. It was quite busy, so we expected a bit of a wait. To our surprise, our food arrived quickly. When our food arrived, I was pleasantly surprised. Honestly, I did expect it to look good, but it looked great. I grabbed my knife and fork and tucked in. I am an absolute sucker for bread and this sourdough was nice and thick, golden brown, and I could tell it was super fresh. My first bite was heavenly. The spinach and mushrooms were perfectly seasoned, the hummus added a lovely nutty flavour, the tomato relish was tangy yet sweet, and to top it all off, the beautifully runny yolks coated everything perfectly. This was absolutely delicious. You could taste it was made with love.

Overall, I had an amazing time here. From the atmosphere to the food, everything was a ten out of ten for me. I have eaten at many restaurants in Kalk Bay, and I can safely say this is my favourite breakfast spot in the area. Thank you to the Ohana team and I cannot wait...

This my first time to give bad reviews, as the experience I had today is very unacceptable. I understand the restaurant is busy on the weekends, me and my husband was standing in the queue and waiting to be seated, the first waitress came and said she could give a table inside that is about to leave, she especially mentioned it’s for 4 people, but she can give this table to us. 5mins later another waitress came and gave us a different 4 seater table outside. 2 mins later the first waitress came and took down our orders and mentioned that if we are fine to move to the 2 seater table next to us when they leave, we said no problem( we understand that people are waiting for tables and we had no problems to move to a smaller table for bigger families) 10 mins later when the table paid, instead of coming to us and move us over, she placed a new couple sitting on the table where we about to move to. Then after that she comes to us again and want us to move to a small table in the passage way… To give our table to A SINGLE MAN TO SIT. We got fed up for being asked rudely to move tables for 3 times. This experience that we destroyed our mood of the whole Sunday morning. We came to enjoy the food and the view, not to expect this. The service is so bad and the food took forever to prepare. Never consider to...

I made a booking for 5 people and an instant prepayment upon securing the booking. When we arrived we realised that the restaurant doesn’t have a liquor licence and I think that should be mentioned somewhere.

Secondly, when we arrived at 09:30 we placed our order and the service was so slow and we kept enquiring about our food but an hour later we still hadn’t received our order. Our order was supposed to be easy as it was cakes, flapjacks etc which are readily available items that do not need a long process or cooking time.

Eventually after noticing that everybody was being served but us we asked for a refund which we couldn’t secure because according to the Manager/owner the funds were not cleared which wasn’t true. As a matter of fact she was happy to serve us water so the funds were clearly in her bank account

The lady I spoke to on the phone was so rude and completely unreasonable. She ended up shouting and singing/howling on the other side of the phone.

It was the worst service I’ve ever experienced and I encountered the most unprofessional owner/manager who lacked the most basic skills of customer service. It’s an experience I would really...

Such a lovely little café. I stopped by here for breakfast after a lovely meander with family from Muizenberg to Kalk Bay, along the beach and railway. The atmosphere is so relaxed and quaint. It has a warm, inviting feel. They also have a great view of the sea in the outside area, which was unfortunately full. But it was alright, sitting inside was also lovely. The staff are nice and friendly, the little café gets a bit busy though. They have freshly baked pastries which taste amazing, and are so light and fluffy! Then they also have a basket of "Day Olds" for R10, which I think is great. Because they're still fresher than what you would probably get at a grocery store. So you can still enjoy the deliciousness when on a budget. The coffees are really nice as well. They also have an antique/vintage store which you can walk through and purchase from. Really a great little place, Will definitely visit there again!

This restaurant boasts one of the most amazing settings on the peninsula (Kalk Bay), and, solely on this, a visit, it is recommended. Only the railway track stands between your table, the rocky shore and False Bay sea! The portions are also generous and delicious. We enjoyed a three-egg omelette (with spinach, mushrooms and goat's milkcheese) and a Salmon Benny. It was a busy weekend and all the tables were taken, so the wait for our order to arrive was understandably quite lengthy. The only improvements that could be made is that the coffee could have been hotter and the bread that accompanied the omelette could have been a lot softer! Other than this, a wonderful experience!
