We arrived at the front door of this restaurant, and there was nobody to greet us. We waited around, still nobody. We went to find a staff member in the back, and ended up having to show ourselves to a table anyway. This is a beautiful restaurant with a lovely relaxed atmosphere. Unfortunately, The staff are a huge letdown. It feels like a group of teenagers running a restaurant for their friends as a school project. Slow and unprofessional service throughout. We ordered the Asian style chicken strips with spicy rice, and the chalmar burger. Both dishes were very disappointing. In particular, there was nothing at all Asian about the chicken strips. The sauce was completely bland and tasteless. The spicy rice had no spice whatsoever and was slightly burnt. This dish was a complete fail. The burger was average, patty overcooked though. The potatoes served with the burger were very tasty. No ketchup available. Overall, a very disappointing experience. Kalk Bay has a huge number of other restaurants and eateries, I wouldn’t come here again.

There is no better place to go for a varied meal: Mezze, Tapas, small plates; call them what you want. Some places offer them but often the portions are large and often too expensive and not often done as well as here. There was such a variety to choose from- read the menus’. We enjoyed white bait (small white fish) with a subtle garlic aoli, gluten free nachos with guac and a ceviche. A short while later, we also tried the meatballs. Although I needed to add salt and pepper to the aioli and more lemon to the ceviche (to help it cure), it was by no means bland. Our favourite beer was also served on tap, which is a plus. The ambiance is cosy and don’t be surprised if someone asks if they can sit at the other end of the table- all part of the vibe. The service was so sweet and friendly. Obviously, the name of our server was Raine, there is no way an ordinary named person would serve us in a chilled, amazing place such as Salt! This is definitely a place that can be visited often. Time your visit well, as it fills up very quickly.

as a cyclist, salt is one of my coffee shops of choice around the whole peninsula… or do i change that to ‘was’? i hadn’t been there in a while so when i passed through kalk bay on sunday, i stopped off for a flat white and a vegan croissant. the waitress was friendly but i think very inexperienced. i was a bit concerned when she first asked if the flat white was to be a single or double shot. we all know that a flat white is technically a double shot of espresso… otherwise it’s not a flat white. the coffee was delicious as always, however, the croissant was very undercooked. when i alerted her to the fact, she was unsure of what to do and wanted to charge for another croissant… really??! anyhoo, when the bill eventually came, i was annoyed to find out that i’d been charged for an extra shot of espresso. i didn’t bother challenging it as i had to get going. but this is unacceptable… daylight robbery! i love supporting small local businesses but when this kind of thing happens, it leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.

Came here tonight as this was one of my restaurant highlights during my last visit to CPT last year, but didn’t even get to eat here this time as we left after 30 minutes without being attended to. When we arrived (group of 3) the restaurant was full and the waitress said the wait would be approximately 30 mins. We could start with a drink outside while we wait- no problem at all. Shortly after us a group of 4 arrived, they were told by the other waitress they were first in line. I thought that was probably a misunderstanding so waited for our waitress to take our drinks order and double check. She never came however, but the other waitress did take the drinks order of the group of 4. After that a group of about 9 people came the exact moment a table of 4 was getting ready to leave. Apparently friends of the waitresses as they all hugged and they were given the table immediately. Still waiting to order drinks I decided to bring in the dirty dishes on our bar outside and asked if someone could take our drinks order- she said she’d be with us soon. Again no one came but I did see someone walk in and wait by a table where 2 ladies had just asked for the bill. I went in again to notify the waitress but instead of asking the man to join the waiting list she took his drink order. Still wanting to wait as I remembered this place for being so good and couldn’t believe what was happening my friends told me I was crazy for even giving it another minute. We then asked the place next door if they had a table and we had amazing dinner there. It’s a real pity as SALT was great but judging by the recent reviews this place needs to be avoided until they let go of the absolute incompetent teenagers...

A 1st experience of this kind. An unfortunate dinner experience, a calamity that was not expected. The restaurant was quite busy as it is a small restaurant with not a lot of tables but managed to get a table, outside on the street. We eventually ordered 2 starters & 2 mains & had a drink. AFTER WAITING MORE THAN AN HOUR for any food to arrive to the table & without any communication from any floor staff member or manager & seeing people getting food before us that ordered 40mins later, I had no choice than to cancel. How can it be that it takes more than an hour to get starters for a restaurant that should be 100% manageable because of the size one should think? This was definitely not the case. The one lady kept saying all the time, I am sorry I am sorry… sorry for what exactly? Sorry that we didn’t receive any food or atleast the starters? Sorry about the incapable floor skills of the staff? Or just sorry for your restaurant (kitchen) completely loosing it last night? By the way when the load shedding started, we already waited 45mins so pls don’t blame it on the loadshedding. We’ve visit your restaurant before & it was always pleasant but what I learned last night is to stay away if it is too busy as you might just end up waiting way too long for your food or not get it at all. Shocking &...

Salt, what a treat you were!

Had the most amazing experience tonight at Salt. My husband and I came and were immediately warmly greeted coming through the doors.

They have the most amazing view of the Kalk Bay harbour, candles lit everywhere, plants, and a great playlist! We felt so at home.

The food was absolutely outstanding. Trying to choose what to eat was one of the hardest decisions we had to make that night. Everything sounded amazing! We ended up trying their winter special kudu gualash with a homemade German pasta. So divine. Perfect for a cold day. Another dish that really stood out was the Bah mi pork belly. I have never been so impressed with a dish and even had to ask the waitress what goes into it so that I can try have a go at making it myself at home.

The presentation of everything was very impressive. They don't serve their drinks or food on trays, they serve them on boards which perfectly frames the plates and glasses.

The service was also just phenomenal! There were three waiters and all of them were so friendly and made us feel so comfortable.

We will absolutely be coming back to Salt!

Thank you so much for...
