Stables Restaurant — Restaurant in Western Cape

Extremely bad service! I love Vergelegen and often visit the beautiful gardens....but Stables restaurant will never see me again. The service was non-existing. Food arrived with no small plates (as we were sharing a pizza) the plates took another 10 minutes to get. Then we had to again find a waiter to bring us salt and pepper. Then AGAIN waited 12 minutes for garlic and chilli to arrive. Meanwhile our pizza was cold. We still don't know who our waitress was because everytime someone else would bring us the stuff in drips and draps. Waited so long for the drinks. It was only 2 glasses of wine but took 15 minutes to get to the table I had to plead with the waitress telling her how thirsty we were and how we were looking forward to the glass of wine. Then again had to ask for ice...wine was already warm in the sun when that eventually arrived. We asked one of the many waitresses we wanted to speak to the manager....she never arrived. My partner had to go and look for her after 10 minutes and all she said was she was sorry and then proceeded to heat up our pizza. The whole experience nearly spoiled our lovely Sunday. At the very least we should have been offered the food or drinks complimentary after all this! I will not recommend anyone to go there. Also there was a group of children busy breaking huge branches off a tree and swinging in the tree like hooligans. Since the parents of these brats were to useless to control them I feel that management should have done something. We go there to enjoy the beautiful nature there not to see how a tree is...

The Stables is always the first port of call for us with our overseas visitors, without fail, until yesterday our food was always exceptional. I ordered the fish, which was super, my husband ordered the pizza, also super, and he had a raspberry tart. My guest ordered the burger with aioli sauce, sadly the sauce did not even seem to appear on the burger, and when my guest asked for some sauce, an age later the sauce was brought and given to the guest on the next table, either it was my guests sauce or the other table had also had a sauce less burger, to add insult to injury the burger was totally overcooked and dry. The raspberry tart pastry was rock hard, so much so it could not be cut, in the end after much effort of trying the pastry base shattered leaving the filling splattered all over the plate, the ice cream was super though. The restaurant was way too busy, the staff run off their feet, we had requested to be put inside but our reservation was not even acknowledged and we were put outside, which was ok, thankfully, as it was not too hot. We have more guests next week, and I hope that we have better luck next time, our waiter was pleasant along with...

I was a guest at lunch yesterday and found it very disappointing indeed. Hot. No aircon. so uncomfortable. Service ok but slow and understandable it was busy. Food well below par. Charcuterie platter R395 and it was extremely poor. Had way better in Reebek Castile for half the price. Nothing on the platter was worth talking about. Dry cold meat, 1 fig cut into 4 pieces. olives very poor quality, and not even one chutney, mustard or jam preserve like onion marmalade. 4 biscuits - stale and we asked to share so hardly enough. 4 doorsteps of bread once i asked for this. Not normal quality we are used to and no effort applied to this. A handful of lettuce on this platter used to fill space. Then dessert. Peanut butter ice cream sandwich. What a let down. Such a small blob of ice cream it was almost hidden under large tasteless biscuits. Not up to standard. Last but not least my daughter in law had a lemon cheese cake. Mouldy underneath. We have supported Stables often but this was a very expensive disappointing lunch for a special birthday occasion. We will think twice about returning...
