Our recent visit to Vergelegen Wine Farm in Somerset West left us profoundly disappointed. As parents of the bride, entrusted with the task of selecting wines for our daughter's upcoming wedding, we had high hopes for a memorable tasting experience. Unfortunately, those hopes were dashed by the underwhelming quality of the wines we sampled, especially the reds. Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted and led through the tasting by a friendly lady. However, as we compared the wines to others we had tasted in the region, it became evident that something was amiss. Our suspicions were confirmed when we learned that the red wines had been opened the day before, leading to a noticeable deterioration in taste. When we inquired about this, the staff member admitted that while the white wine was poured from a freshly opened bottle, the reds were not. This revelation was disheartening, as we had paid for a premium tasting experience and expected nothing less than the finest wines. Regrettably, the flagship wine which we had hoped would be a standout for our daughters' wedding, fell short of expectations. We expressed our disappointment to the staff, emphasising that if the taste of the newly opened bottles was the the same as the "Old" ones, we would have to look elsewhere for our wedding wines. Leaving Vergelegen Wine Farm, we couldn't shake the feeling of missed opportunity. What should have been a chance for Vergelegen to showcase their world-class red wines and potentially be a part of our daughter's special day was marred by the serving of "second-hand" wine. It's a shame that such a promising visit ended in...
Read moreToday was an awesome excursion to Vergelegen Wine Estate. I have not been here for 10 years apart from coming to the Carol's by Candlelight which was spectacular the tickets was sold out for that evening due to this event being absolutely highly recommended. Today I did the whole walkabout from the Main House where the paintings tell their own story and every other room a reminder of the past and those wonderful people who lived there many moons back. And low and behold the one sightseeing man went into the sitting room where there was a piano and he started playing music that filled the house with lifd. Then after just soaking in this splendor of music I made my way to the restaurant for a, cup of tea then went on to walk through the luscious gardens the rose garden was breathtaking then the Tea Garden restaurant was fully packed with people eating chitter chatting in the haze of the afternoon heat. The other Restaurant called Cafe Fleur was having a late afternoon wedding and the setup was exactly what a young bride would dream of small quaint and breathtaking. The library is just so full of years gone by the long conference table the books and there was even a Piano, which let it be known is played by anyone who has the ability to play it just making the moment seem to stand still. The wine tasting room too was filled inside and out with conosuers of wine tasting or so it seemed everyone had something to say. Now time had caught up to me it was nearing 17.00 and the places were closing for the day. So much to see so little time... I would definitely have to go back to see all that is to view and eat and drink... Go...
Read moreAn amazingly beautiful setting for any occasion.
It’s difficult to comprehend how much time, effort and money goes into crafting this tranquility in nature.
For children the gardens are a magical place of giant trees that provide homes to squirrels, butterflies, fairies and gnomes who live amongst the gnarled 300-year-old roots.
The wine tasting experiences are an adventure. That said I’m no wine connoisseur, so I won’t spout forth about how fruitiness compliments the hints of tannin from the 100-year-old oak barrels. I will say that there are a few wines you are going to love.
Vergelegen is a step into freedom, nature and wonderful meals.
Reading through the reviews I cannot begin to understand the one or two misguided souls who take more pleasure drawing attention to themselves by whining out loud about things their little minds aren’t really able to comprehend.
Of course it gets busy at peak times – so, if happy people walking through magnificently beautiful gardens aren’t your thing choose quieter times in-between holidays and the festive season.
Yes, there’s always room for a little improvement, but have a little consideration for the staff who answer to your beck and call – they get it right almost 100% of the time.
And about that nominal gate fee – the gardens, the meals, the hospitality and the wines are all better for it.
