At McDonalds in South Korea in addition to the standard burgers such as BigMac, McChicken or McRoyal, there are also special burgers to choose from that suit the Korean palate, such as the Bulgogi burger. If you want to eat right there in the restaurant, i.e. do not order to take away, then you get your drink served in one of the hard plastic drinking cups. However, if you order to take away, then the drinks are filled into paper cups and given away. The hard plastic drinking cups are washed on site in the restaurant for reuse, only the lids are replaced. You don’t get straws or drinking straws either, since you can drink directly through the opening of the lid, which not only saves the operator costs, but also causes less plastic waste for the sake of the environment. However, this is not universal for all fast food restaurants. All restaurants handle this individually. The drinking cups are generally, no matter in which restaurant, first blasted with ice cubes by the employees before they fill it up with the desired drink. That was one of the reasons why I caught a cold right at the beginning of the first week here in Seoul. Therefore, be forewarned, if you want to do without ice cubes, you should explicitly point out to the employee at the beginning of each order that you do not want ice cubes in your drink. However, some restaurants also have self-service drink dispensers, where you can decide for yourself whether and how many ice cubes you want in your drink. But as I said, this is not the case in all restaurants, only in some. Most people pay with their credit card. In all my visits I have never seen anyone pay for their order with cash.
