We went here once before (different branch) and had an experience buying moldy jam. So I didnโ€™t want to come back, but the couple we were traveling with wanted to try the bakery.

The most popular item on the menu is their seasonal tower cake (this season was ๐Ÿฅญ ) and you need to get in line to secure a reservation.

Our friends vs. us ๐ŸฅฒThey set their alarm, got up early, and arrived around 8am for the first round of cakes (@8:30 for 9am pickup) But the bakery only made 25 mango cakes and they were 30th in lineโ€ฆ. So they got nothingโ€ฆ

๐ŸงWe heard how upset they were so we went to see if we could get lucky and cheer them up. We arrived around 10:20 for the second round of cakes (10:30 for 11am pickup). This time they were able to make about 47 cakes and we got 2 of the reservations.

This is part of the season why I gave their service a 2/5. They didnโ€™t have very clear signs for the people who were waiting for cakes and I kept seeing a lot of people wasting their time. Or waiting in line for nothing; the breads also sold out quickly too and it was crazy haha.

Itโ€™s hard to keep up with the demand/greed of other customers though and I thought the workers were working really hard...

Sungsimdang Bakeryโ€™s DCC Branch is indeed a popular destination, known for its variety of baked goods, especially the renowned fried soboro. After hearing so much praise, I finally had the chance to visit, but I found the experience a bit underwhelming. While the bakery itself is impressive, with its stylish interior and dual role as a cafe and restaurant, the experience didnโ€™t fully meet my expectations.

The fried soboro bread, which many rave about, turned out to be too greasy for my taste. I preferred the regular soboro bread, which was more to my likingโ€”less oily and more balanced in flavor. The bakery does offer a wide selection of pastries, and the atmosphere is certainly appealing, but the long wait outside, especially in 95-degree heat, felt excessive and took away from the enjoyment.

Overall, while Sungsimdang Bakery lives up to its reputation in some aspects, the wait and the overly greasy signature item made the experience less satisfying for me. Itโ€™s worth visiting for the variety and ambiance, but Iโ€™m not sure Iโ€™d endure the long line again, especially in...

So far my favourite bakery in Daejeon. I understand it to be a family business in operation since 1956? To be confirmed. I have tried the chocolatine, rice breads with various potato fillings and the chocolate bread. All get top marks from me. The loaves of wheat bread looked delicious as well. I am committed to eating my way through as many of their offerings as I can manage. :). Perhaps I should try the famed fried bread next. There is a coffee counter as well, which serves acceptable coffee options and sandwiches. But their baked goods are a whole different league. They seem to manage to serve lots of customers relatively quickly. Despite that it tends to get very crowded, I ...
