"Better Than Espresso"

Now nine years old, the Leesar Coffee brand is undoubtedly recognised as the original espresso trend-setter in South Korea. Starting from a tiny Naples style standing bar in February 2012, brand director and CEO Lee Moon-sub has since created a roastery and espresso bar café in Yaksu-dong, followed by a bold venture into Seoul’s wealthy suburb of Cheongdam-dong.

Their newest café has a distinct European vibe to it; luxurious marble counter-tops, vintage wooden terrace style chairs and a gold leaf typeface logo on the front window. Even the retro lamppost feature looming over the back bar was imported directly from Paris.

All of Leesar’s coffees are roasted in-house on their 12kg capacity SF-25E built by Nevada (USA) based “The San Francisco Roaster Company”. Their current house dark blend features both Brazilian and Ethiopian coffee beans, picked specifically to suit their style of sweet, nutty and intense hand-pulled espressos. The menu has expanded to include a full range of white and black coffees including very traditional takes on Italian classics Pieno, con Panna, Oneroso and Affogato. Sticking to tradition they use a 3-group La San Marco 85 Leva Class espresso machine which uses a lever style operation to manually force the water through the coffee as opposed to steam pressure extraction in regular machines.

Leesar's branded posters are an imitation of the classic 1920s art by Leonetto Cappiello, "the father of modern advertising" who famoulsy produced a series of adverts for Italian espresso machine manufacturer La Victoria Arduino in 1922.

Had a quick espresso on my way to lunch, the cafe con panna was so good. I don’t drink much coffee but I’d agree that it’s the best espresso I’ve had. Bought some beans. There’s a standing bar option that’s actually cheaper than sitting at a table, which was interesting. Not a huge food selection but the cookies are tasty - more of a quick stop...

돈까스전원에서 등심돈까스를 맛있게 먹고 집으로 오다 예전에 집 근처 호시카츠에서 가족인원과 돈카츠를 먹고 나왔는데 근처에 괜찮은 커피가게가 있다고 가족인원이 데려가서 방문했었을 때 커피 맛보단 가게 분위기나 직원들의 분위기가 마치 미국 캘리포니아 Monterey나 Laguna Beach 같은 해변가 동네에서 볼 것 같은 분위기가 인상적이었던 카멜커피가 없어지고 약수동에서 여러번 방문했었던 리사르커피가 들어왔다고 해서 궁금해 들러서 입가심 느낌으로 마시고 들어가기로 함.

지난번에 일요일에 들르려고 갔다가 일요일엔 휴무였어서 헛걸음을 했었음.

가게는 이미 와봤었고 동네여서 금방 가게 앞에 도착함.

밖에서 보니 가게 안엔 제법 손님이 있었고 계단을 오르면서 예전 캘리포니아 해변가 동네 가게 분위기 뿜뿜이었던 게 어떻게 변했을지 궁금했는데 가게 안으로 들어서니 예잔 분위기는 전혀 안 느껴져 좀 실망이았는데 대신 에스프레소가 메인인 가게답게 간단히 마시고 갈 수 있는 분위기로 바뀐 느낌임.

간단히 서서 마시고 갈 거여서 제일 기본인 카페 에스프레소를 부탁드리니 주문번호를 건네주시면서 에스프레소를 추출하는 직원분께 전달하고 기다리면 된다고 알려주셔서 주문번호를 전달하고 기다림.

금방 준비되어 나왔는데 에스프레소 잔을 잡으니 적당히 데워져 있어 좀 더 전문적으로 에스프레소를 내리는 가게의 느낌 뿜뿜임.

설탕을 부탁드리니 이미 한 스푼 들어가있다고 해서 스푼으로 잘 저어 설탕이 잘 녹게한 후 원샷으로 마시는데 에스프레소의 온도 역시 너무 뜨겁거나 하지 않고 적당해서 에스프레소 전문점 느낌 뿜뿜으로 느껴짐.

물 한 잔을 부탁드려 입을 헹군 후 가겔 나옴.

전체적으로 옥수동에서 여러번 방문했던 리사르커피가 예전 카멜커피 자리에 새롭게 오픈했다고 해서 집으로 들어가는 길에 들러봤는데 예전 카멜커피의 캘리포니아 해변가 동네 가게 분위기는 완전히 사라졌지만 대신 이태리에 가본 적은 없지만 뭔가 이태리에서 볼 것 같은 에스프레소 전문점의 느낌으로 바꼈고 에스프레소의 맛이나 적당히 데워진 에스프레소 잔과 에스프레소의 온도 역시 에스프레소 전문점 느낌 뿜뿜이어서...
