An excellent coffee, yet served with an unwelcoming and haughty attitude.
I ordered a double espresso for me - no hiccups there - and two lungos for my parents - and that's where the problems started.
The person at the bar first responded that "all Nomad espressos are double". I tried gently to explain that I didn't want double espressos, just lungos. She went on saying that she could make me Americanos, adding some kettle water on top of the espressos. Again, these would not be lungos and I tried patiently explaining exactly what I was hoping to get, to no avail.
To be clear, I have no problem with someone not knowing what a lungo is, even if they work as a barista. I do take issue however with the unfortunately common snobbishness among those who deal with specialty coffee. The person at Nomad tried to gaslight me, implying that my lungo order was at best odd.
A quick side-note here (also for full disclosure): I co-own a specialty coffee business myself. As a result, I do have strong opinions about extraction techniques and how best to bring out the flavors of my coffee. But I've also come to realize the vanity and flaw of judging on behalf of others what should be considered good coffee. In fact, I never order a lungo for myself. But I have found that people (often older) who find espresso too "strong" sometimes opt for a lungo instead.
Nomad's coffee is exquisite. Also, they've invested in excellent equipment (including a KB90 espresso machine). However, whether they realize it or not, Nomad people seem to have embraced an unfortunate tendency in specialty coffee to look down onto non erudites who come with a requests outside the esoteric confines of their...
Read moreI’ve visited this place a few times, and the experience had always been good — until today. Today, however, that positive impression was ruined by one of the café staff — a barista, waiter, or whoever he was.
We placed our order and took a few photos inside the café. We specifically waited until there were not many visitors, so as not to disturb anyone. But as we were already outside, one of the staff members shouted after us, “I’m speaking to you!” He then approached us and quite rudely reprimanded us for taking photos.
I totally understand asking guests not to take pictures — that’s completely reasonable. But the rudeness of this man… this is not how staff should treat their guests. I’m not sure I ever want to come back to this place again, because such harsh behavior from the staff ruins everything...
Read moreThis place is ranked 25 in the world, so I visited twice. First visit - cafe American (americano) €3 - and a Macha cookie. The coffee blew me away, the flavour was intensely satisfying, slightly floral, very fruity. 2nd visit - I had to go back for a special filter- Guatemala Conception I think. Even better. The service was friendly, quick and professional. Lovely atmosphere. There was an error in my 2nd order - they corrected it and insisted that I didn't pay the difference. Also had a cinnamon swirl - €3 but worth every penny. If you like coffee, or just want to try something incredible, come to this place. I have no idea why we pay more money for dreadful coffee in UK, this place is...
