YUANLAOSI Hotpot — Restaurant in Barcelona

Yesterday was my last visit to this restaurant, even though I have eaten here several times before. Unfortunately, I need to point out that this is the only place where we are not recognized as recurring customers. I am not expecting any special treatment or price, just a nice greeting as one would expect when seeing someone several times. However, the staff here seems to be cold and all about getting customers in and out quickly. It feels like a fancy Chinese McDonald's, to put it bluntly. The manager, a Chinese lady, was especially cold and even mistreated me when I politely asked if my order would take much longer because a friend had to leave soon. I would rather choose to support places that appreciate my business instead of acting as if they are doing me a favor by serving me.

I would also like to warn others about the "sauces" surcharge. Basically, they ask you to go to a counter with nothing exciting but many jarred sauces to get your own sauces. Whether you have them or not, they automatically add a charge of 2 euros per person to your bill. In my experience, 9 out of 10 times, the surcharge was added to the bill, and I had to dispute it. What really makes hot pot enjoyable (to me) is the right combination of soup stock/broth, selection of meats, vegetables, authentic delicacies (such as shrimp paste, rolled tofu, lotus roots) and dipping sauce. YLS Hotpot definitely has wonderful flavored stocks as the pork bone and tomato flavors were perfectly seasoned and so delicious that sauce may not be needed. The choices of vegetables and sides seemed to be carefully selected and are truly authentic to Asian tastes; yet, there are plenty to chose from if you are new to Chinese hotpot. And, the buffet of condiments for you to create your own sauce is as perfect as can get. Our tastebuds were wonderfully satisfied.

Now, for the extras that Yuan Lao Shi has that made our experience superb. The space and decor takes you to China…traditional, beautiful,classy. Service was excellent without being pretentious…staff were attentive and genuinely wanting to help as needed. I tend to order more than I need. The place is very nice, it really is a Chinese restaurant and the food is the same, as soon as you enter you see how the entrance is decorated and you continue to the back and the lamps the tables everything is super beautiful. The food I expected to be something bigger, it's not so small quantities, but of course in Asia you eat a lot but in small quantities; I'm very surprised how I have to cook things in the pot they put in the middle, that's very interesting. The staff was very friendly from the beginning and are very willing to help you in whatever you need.
