A tavern serving traditional Basque dishes and a Bib Gourmand winner for many years, this cozy spot features simple, personalized décor with seating divided between outdoor tables at the entrance, ground floor seating, and a mezzanine area. The waiters are very friendly and can professionally explain the menu in both English and Spanish. The place also provides a huge selection of wines to complement your meal.
We ordered a half Ensaladilla rusa con mahonesa de huevo frito, a Sopa de pescado y marisco, Callos y chorizo a la vizcaína, and a Chuleta de cerdo madurada, peras al txakolí y encurtidos. Each dish was delicious and generously portioned. I particularly loved the sopa de pescado y marisco, which was rich without being fishy and packed with fish and seafood. The Chuleta de cerdo madurada was crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside due to the richness of the fat. The high-quality meat was cooked to a medium-well doneness without any blood. With drinks, our total was 71 EUR, which is very affordable given the quality and quantity of the food.
This traditional Basque tavern in the old town of Bilbao offers high-quality dishes with innovative concepts. If you have the chance to visit Bilbao and want to experience authentic Basque cuisine, this is a great place to dine. Due to the small size of the tavern, it’s advisable to make reservations in advance as it usually...
Read moreWe recently visited Los Ferros, a restaurant in the Basque Country, for dinner and opted for the full €64 p/p tasting menu for two. While the experience had some highlights, it ultimately left us disappointed.
The building itself is lovely, and the service was excellent. Our server truly elevated the atmosphere, offering great advice on wine and thoroughly explaining the dishes. Unfortunately, the food did not live up to the expectations set by its Michelin recommendation.
The dishes were just okay—nothing memorable or exceptional—and the presentation was underwhelming, especially considering the price. The portions were minimal, which is acceptable if you’re offering a small-bites experience, but in that case, the ingredients should be of supreme quality. Sadly, this wasn’t the case. For instance, if you consider potato, onion, and lettuce to be a complete meal, this might suffice, but for us, it fell short.
While the service was excellent, the overall dining experience was...
Read moreLovely staff & good, if somewhat slow, service. What confuses me is what they're trying to do. Amuse bouche was a fois gras emulsion topped by a red wine & coke emulsion. They said it was a joke but I'm afraid I didn't get it. Octopus salad with rocket (the last vegetal thing in the meal) was OK but too much sauce. Sardine empanadas also OK, though too emulsified, some texture would have been nice. Soggy bottom as they were placed on a sauce, though not sure what the sauce was. Hake itself cooked properly but the 'batter' was too soft & a little greasy. Basque pork ribs had nice bone marrow sauce but were a bit fatty. As I intimated not a vegetable in sight. Nothing tasted bad but nothing blew me away either. As I also said I'm not quite sure what they're trying to show off & wonder if that's true of them too? Nice Valenciso Reserva Rioja @€26.50. €91, including the wine for...
