Restaurante Lurrina — Restaurant in Bilbao

My son and I had a long drive from Porto and arrived at the Lurrina Restaurant at 10 PM on Sunday, an hour before the restaurant closed. We were the only patrons.

To be mindful of the time, we scanned the English version of the menu, asked for recommendations, and went with what our server, Frank, recommended. His recommendations did not disappoint us, including the wine, Lar de Paula Merus 2016, which went well with everything we had.

Though late, the bread was good, with a crunchy crust and soft center. He served this with some patté, an amuse bouche, gratis. Followed by a salad with fried goat cheese, and scallops on a soft bed of polenta. A wonderful pairing.

My son had the sirloin steak, and it came sliced against the grain and rare. I had Hake on sautéed vegetables, topped with a bit of seaweed. My hake was delicious, and my son enjoyed his steak, too.

Just back to our hotel after a meal at Lurrina. It was AMAZING. We had goose liver pâté, then tiny fried hot green peppers, then grilled anchovies with olives, balsamic vinegar and chiles. After that we had pork loin that was melt-in-your-mouth tender and a beef loin that was barely rare, sliced on a bed of mashed potatoes. We got great wine pairing suggestions from the kind and attentive staff. For dessert there was warm cheesecake and a chocolate brownie with lavender ice cream. The food was awesome! The service was good too but what I didn’t like is that when asked “are you going to share the plates?”, that was automatically translated to “we will bring the plates one after the other, even the mains”.

So they were expecting us to fully finish one single plate before they would bring the next one. That was very weird and they could have just asked if we want it this way.
