Negative Experience – Excessive Charges and Unethical Behavior
As we passed by the restaurant, a girl approached us with a flyer offering the daily menu for €12(which included a drink, a first course, a second course, bread and dessert). We accepted the suggestion and sat down. They soon brought a basket of bread and four butters—which we didn't order—as well as two small appetizers (some cheese and olives). All of this was charged separately afterward, even though we hadn't requested it.
The employee tried to convince us to order à la carte (clearly more expensive), but we decided to stick with the daily menu as advertised.
In the end, we ordered desserts that were on the menu (ice cream), but when it came time to get the bill, they charged:
€12.50 for each menu (not €12 as advertised), an additional €0.50 mentioned in the flayer, without clear explanation,
€1 for each butter (totaling €4), and the €2 bread, which we didn't even eat, was charged separately when it was part of the menu.
Because we didn't speak the local language, it seemed they saw us as easy targets. This was unethical, dishonest, and unprofessional behavior. It's unfortunate to see this type of practice, which tarnishes the reputation of the place and the city.

El Requéte sits right in the heart of Plaza Mayor, and its location alone guarantees a lively and energetic atmosphere. The place was absolutely buzzing — a full house with a good mix of locals and tourists, which gave it a vibrant and authentic vibe. If you’re looking for a bustling spot to soak in the local scene, this certainly delivers.
That said, the experience didn’t quite match the ambiance. I ordered the risotto, which I wouldn’t recommend if you’re from the U.S. or Italy and expecting anything close to traditional. It was more like white rice floating in a creamy mushroom-onion soup — not the texture or flavor profile you’d typically expect.
Also, my glass of wine took over 30 minutes to arrive — a surprising delay given how fast-paced the service otherwise appeared. When it did show up, it was just average at best.
Overall, go for the atmosphere and maybe stick to simpler regional dishes. There’s charm in the chaos, but not all the menu items live up to...

El Requete is egregiously overpriced and the food is at best mediocre, a tourist trap where the waiter’s goal is to upsell and then add charges for butter for which we did not ask, bread, a separate charge, and finally a separate charge for small packets of olive oil, which in Spain is plentiful. The food was partially warm and partially cold indicating microwave preparation and fast food, which was unexpected given the high pricing on the menu. Our bill was over €75 including a pretty unappetizing cheese dish they recommended to us and €20 or so in bread and olive oil/butter charges. We did not ask for the bread related add ons - and were charged for them even though we didn’t finish them.
Skip this place and wander a bit further from the central square for a more satisfying and fairly...
