It has been a few years since I last visited Al Sur de Granada and it has changed a little. The wonderful roasted vegetable sandwiches were no longer available but what was available was a delightful, relaxed, informative and friendly experience. Jessica was so attentive and clearly not only loves her work but has a huge knowledge about wine and oil. She has a relaxed and easygoing manner and makes you feel as though you are at home with her. The sourdough bread was incredible and paired with olive oil from Cordoba and sheep milk butter was elevated to the highest level. I was sceptical about the butter as I'd never tried it before and don't generally like goat products but it was so good I had to buy some. We started with some roasted green peppers and goat cheese, delicious. The chickpea and chard soup was perfection, (abuela's recipe) as was the wine Jessica chose for us. The whole place was spotless and the variety of interesting, and carefully chosen products is amazing. It makes me wish I lived in Granada and could go every day. If you are visiting the town make this one of your stops and have the tasting menu. You'll leave feeling you've been with friends and it'll be an experience you'll talk about with everyone you meet. A big thank you to Jessica for a...
Read moreWhat started off as a quick trip to a wine shop for a bottle of wine turned into an almost 8 hour tasting experience that can only be described as perfect.
We googled wine shops in Granada and were impressed by the reviews and selection on the Al Sur de Granada website. When we arrived it was clear that this was more than just another bottle shop. They have wine, bread, olive oil, and other food items that all complement the wines they sell and serve. We quickly decided to do the 4 wine and 4 plate tastings. It was phenomenal! It is an intimate setting with only 8 spots total. Besides the wonderful wine, the food pairings were deliberate and delicious. Each course and wine worked in harmony to bring out the best each had to offer. About halfway through our first tastings we were asked if we would be interested in joining their 7 wine/plate tasting after the first was done. We did not hesitate to sign up.
We had a full table for the 7 wine/plate pairing and now I'm going to talk about the wonderful woman behind all of this; Alba. She is truly what made the night special. She tailored our tastings as we went, and provided endless knowledge about the food and wine. A huge thank you to both Alba and Jessica for a memorable evening and for putting up with us...
Read moreAl Sur de Granada is without question our favorite little shop in Granada, and their tastings are a special, memory-making experience. If you're like us, you might hesitate at the price tag for the 7 wines 7 dishes tasting, but we are so glad we splurged—and can attest that it is worth every penny and then some. (In fact, we've now splurged on it twice, three years apart, and it was a highlight of our stay in Granada both times.) Alba knows every bottle of wine as though it were an old friend, probably because she actually has personally befriended every single winemaker in Spain and coaxed them into selling her their best wines. Jessica joined Alba at the shop after leaving a career trajectory as an executive chef, and it shows—her tortilla de patatas (which she starts slow-cooking an hour before you arrive) is top-tier, and her soy vinaigrette avocado salad and roasted leeks with poached pears also deserve special mention. Come hungry and thirsty, because the pours and the portions are generous. Two visits, three years apart, yet somehow we consider them both friends. If we're lucky enough to find ourselves back in this city, Al Sur de Granada will be...
