BREAKFAST REVIEW
Lilly's Bar Roquetas de Mar
A bit different from my usual reviews because I'm on holiday so the chances are slim you'll get the chance to try this one. Unless of course you come and visit Roquetas de Mar, which, by the way, I would thoroughly recommend.
So first morning of our hols, having arrived late last night and I was determined that self catering didn't mean we'd have to cater for ourselves. So under the pretence of looking to buy me a new sun hat (I'd forgot to pack mine) we set off down the road. It was about 10am and the sun was already baking hot. We hadn't gone far - about 100 yds - when I suggested a halt for refreshments. We were at Lilly's bar and we took a seat outside under the covered pavement section of the bar. A waitress soon arrived and we ordered couple of coffees and asking for a menu were directed to the blackboard attached to one of the tent's walls. We both ordered a small breakfast. My mum said she didn't want black pudding but I intervened saying she did, knowing that I could snaffle it off her plate. I didn't want a hash brown but my mum didn't want extra so I suppose we lost out a bit.
The breakfasts soon arrived and at first sight they looked great. Indeed they were. Now I know you don't come to Spain to eat English food but equally you don't order an English breakfast to eat Spanish food. The Bacon was a nice thickness and cooked well, the sausage although not a gourmet butchers own was a nice English style sausage. The tomato was delicious, in my opinion Spanish are among the best in the world. The black pudding was next level, I suspect it may have been a local recipe As much as we claim dominion over the creation of black pudding the Spanish version holds its own against our best. The beans were okay - probably heinz. The toast was sliced white with a side of real butter. The tomato sauce was heinz and the brown sauce HP.
It was a great breakfast and I would highly reccomend a visit to Lilly' Bar for friendly servive a great breakfast at a very reasonable price.
Regular readers of my reviews may have noticed I have started eating eggs again - its seems the affliction that struck me a few years ago has now left me and I am free to enjoy eggs as I please. The Egg at Lilly's...
Read moreAfter reading one bad review and a few good reviews about the Sunday lunch here we decided to give this place the benefit of the doubt and try it. BIG MISTAKE. Yes, the lunch might only be €8.50 but the quality is poor and the portions small. Now for someone on holiday here this might seem a bargain at €8.50, but we live in Almeria province and have had so many better Sunday lunches for a similar price in other places. We had 2 very small slices of beef, a soggy Yorkshire pudding, a miniscule amount of vegetables, 2 tiny roast potatoes and some mash. I wish I had taken a photo of it to show you. I tried to talk to the owner at the time to let her know and was told in no uncertain terms that they have been serving Sunday lunch there for the last 11 years and that they are 1 of only 2 places here to get a Sunday lunch. Her attitude was that her food could not possibly have anything wrong with it and we were in the wrong. Maybe they have just become complacent in what they do or maybe 11 years ago what they are doing would have been acceptable in relation to other restaurants, but they need to realise that other establishments have upped their game in that time and are serving higher quality lunches for the same money. As for being 1 of only 2 places that do Sunday lunch maybe they should be striving to be the best in the area instead of settling for 2nd rate. Overall, the service was slow, the food quality poor and the owner's attitude awful. We...
Read moreI would just like to say a massive thank you to this bar, after bad experiences In English bar not to far from the hotel we experienced potentially the best customer service ever! We called before hand to ensure the darts (not known to many) would be shown which it was, we was helped on arrival to be told its inside, we have been in almeria a week which we have hardly got our little girl to eat, on arrival she wanted a pizza, chips and beans which she ate majority of, the adults food was absolutely gorgeous I had the chicken curry with a side of garlic bread and would highly recommend, They went above and beyond to the point they stayed open just so we could get a taxi at 12.30 when they should of already closed! Thank you so much, we will...
