Wow. This is a hidden gem, only because Akari is not on the main tourist streets. At the risk of making this place less hidden, I am writing this review because it deserves to be more known. This is Basque food with a very slight Japanese twist, which always makes any meal better. I had the red pepper appetizer, which was excellent. The cod bacalao was silky and cooked lightly to perfection. Delicately flavored bacalao sauce. The Gateau Basque for dessert was perfect. All food, including ice cream, is made in house with expert care by the husband and wife cooking team who are actually Japanese. You are forced to taste each bite, rather than eat, because it is so well done. I will be coming here each time I am in Donostia. Easy to get a table too. Don't miss this artistic experience. A meal...

Definitely a place worth the extra 20min walk from our spot. Delicious modern Japanese cuisine with a hint of local inspiration. Friendly service, seemingly a family business, we struggled at first to understand the size of the dishes, some of the entree’s turned out quite hearty leaving us very satisfied and no room left at the end of the evening. I loved the Gyoza and the various fish dishes, however other at our table voted heavily for the Pork Teriyaki. The atmosphere is low-key, borderline silent even with some recorded piano music on low volume. I dropped the little bottle of chili oil from an inch up down on the table and it felt like the noise made everyone in the restaurant turn their...

How this restaurant is not getting more love is beyond me. A wonderful marriage of flavours between Japanese and Basque.... helmed by a passionate husband and wife team who delivers on service, quality, and cooking skills.... my fish was perfectly cooked and flavours well ba... Japanese perfectionism is evident! The interesting "prawn bricks" needs to be renamed cause those light crunchy wrapped prawns are nothing like bricks! I'll be going back to graze across the menu!

P.S. I think those people who complain about service have not accounted for the language and cultural differences.... service was perfectly efficient and acceptable when I went, she even recommended...

DO NOT MISS THIS PLACE IF YOU COME TO SS. It is one or the only place owned and managed by Japanese . The couple used to have a small restaurant in the Barrio del Antiguo, Txubillo. It was almost impossible to get a place there. They moved to the actual place, and renovated only to enter into the COVID period. Rough times. Be mindful that they are doing Japanese Basque FUSION food. I rediscovered the place and became a regular. If you want “real” sushi, don’t criticize this place for being fusion, there are many expensive places with poorly defrosted maguro and shake, badly cooked rice and Chinese nori in SS. You will then realize that the sushi here is great. Cheers

This was my go-to spot when I lived in Donostia / San Sebastian for eight months while attending school. It is hidden off the main road and I found it by happy accident. The chef and waitress, I believe are both japanese and are so very sweet. I felt like the sushi platter is very generous; the dumplings are made fresh on the spot; and the asian desserts change periodically and tastefully. We've tried their specials like: chawanmushi (with foie from the Basque country), and an unagi bowl. Also, his sauces are so unique and lovely: I particularly liked the sauce that came with what they call "brick shrimp." It is a hidden gem and not as crowded as downtown.
