After eating Pad Thai at hundreds of restaurants around the USA and internationally, I was excited to see what the food culture of Donostia would produce. Unfortunately, I had some problems with the dish. The positives: fresh taste, not too much sauce. A Pad Thai that drips with Mystery Red Sauce is no good for me. The sauce was light, delicate, and had a good - but mild - flavor. Good usage of fried egg chunks too.
The negatives: vegetables, or lack thereof. My favorite pad thai dishes have had lots of fresh, still firm and crunchy bean sprouts in them. This dish mostly had carrot shavings, but not much else. There was also only a few sodden pieces of green onions, too - once again, limp, similar to the bean sprouts.
I don't know about Basque culture and spicy food, but instead of asking what level of spicy I wanted, the takeout boxes (they do takeaway only here 🥡 - I love that all cutlery and boxes are wood and paper!) had a little baggie of tiny crushed peanut bits, and tiny bits of pepper flakes. It's a matter of personal taste of course, but I like a lot of good, crunchy peanut bits mixed in by the chef. Just like the bean sprouts, the crunch is a nice counterpoint to a good rice noodle. I wish they would have at least asked about spicy levels I wanted, and mixed the pepper in during the cooking accordingly instead of me having to do it after the dish was already prepped and mixing is not as effective.
The resulting flavor of the pad Thai was simply inoffensive, not bad, but not very interesting either. It mostly tasted like a mildly flavored mouthful of lightly...
Read moreI’ve been waiting to try their pad Thai for almost two years now. I ordered their pad thai with pork, shrimp rice balls and the meat and vegetable fried rolls. The pad thai does not have the smoked, salty flavor that is typical of this dish. The pork as dry and lacked flavor. The rice balls were a bit dry and crumbly. The meat and vegetables roll was really good and probably my favorite of the three. Sadly, the pad thai is not for me. For the best pad Thai flavor in the city, go to...
Read moreComida Tailandesa deliciosa!
