Located in the heart of San Sebastián’s Old Town, Casa Vergara offers a delightful array of traditional pintxos, accompanied by beer, sangria, and coffee. The ambiance is cozy and inviting, making it a popular spot for both locals and tourists.
Food: Casa Vergara serves a variety of cold pintxos, which can be warmed upon request. The selection is diverse, ranging from ham to seafood.
Iberico Ham Sandwich: A standout, the sandwich is flavorful and perfectly captures the essence of Spanish cuisine.
Sea Urchin: This dish had a smooth texture but was slightly fishy for my taste.
Duck: Cooked to perfection, the duck was succulent and delicious.
Octopus: My favorite dish of the evening, the octopus was tender and well-seasoned.
However, the potatoes and fried fish fell a bit short. They were not as crispy as I had hoped, and while still tasty, a mix of crispy and soft textures would have added to the experience. Overall, the food leaned towards a softer, moister texture.
Service: The staff at Casa Vergara were friendly and attentive, enhancing the overall dining experience.
Atmosphere: The restaurant’s location in Old Town provides a charming backdrop, especially on a rainy day. It’s an ideal spot to enjoy a relaxed meal while soaking in the local atmosphere.
Verdict: Casa Vergara is a great place to enjoy a variety of pintxos, especially if you prefer softer textures. Despite a few minor critiques, the overall experience was positive, and I would recommend it, particularly on a rainy day when a cozy, comforting meal is just...
Read moreThey specialize in seafood pintxos and serves oysters and prawns to grill. Perhaps I should have went for that instead, coming here..Could have been fresh and delicious. When I saw it was only 4.2, I was hesitant to ask my friends to come and eat here..But I’ve been home sick of Japan and they were serving unusual meals like Sea Urchin and Milt so I thought could be interesting for my friends to try. But the fried Pintxos were served cold and as we all know cold fried food is bad. I still went for it because if they’re doing it in San Sebastián perhaps they’ve cracked the code on how to enjoy cold fried food. Behhh I was wrong. Why did I not try traditional Jamon Iberico meal as my first lunch in San Sebastián as a warm welcome to my foodie self, and opted for the tourist price pintxos. A pintxo is about 5 euros. Also, I tried a hot-served non-seafood dish to see overall if they deliver good food besides the pintxos, but it was also disappointing. Although..The service here is really good, we were served quick, servers are not rude! Coming from France, I still was unprepared for the havoc hostility we will get from other restaurants we will try..So I’m grateful their servers here are normally nice people. The location is on the corner right in front of the church at the end of the street, and atmosphere is pleasant probably...
Read moreGood tapas. Fish stuff is all fresh and tasty, only thing is it's probably a bit pricey for what you get - not a huge fan of this cream mayo base stuff they put on the bread. I feel like some of the dishes could exemplify the seafood better. I'm not sure why the Spanish don't do that like Portugal where they truly have endless fish. Otherwise it's a squicky spot. Id say they may be charging double due to tourism . Certainly the sea urchin thing is nice but because they bake it or whatever you don't get the full urchin taste like you would with Japanese food. Id say the Spanish even the basque try but come up short in authentic cuisine..
Update: I tried the pinchos in town and now I have to say I'm not into fried food or potatoes so casa Vergara actually strikes way above the ordinary. I didn't see any other bar serving fish like this place, in Bilbao yes but not around Donastia. I recommend this...
