This is an odd place and not really aimed at tourists from what we could gather. We were a group of 4 and upon entry we were handed a glass and taken to our table. We received a bottle of cider and a stick of bread placed directly on the table and thus began our great albeit relatively plate-less experience.
Our entree’s arrived in the form of a tasty cod omelette but no plates to eat from so we had to reach over to the shared plate, hack off a mouthful being careful not to drop it as it was transported to our mouths with our napkin underneath.
Then came the cod with peppers, again, no plates for us. We enquired about getting some additional plates and our request was denied and we were told it this was the traditional way!
None the less, the cod, like the omelette was very nicely cooked and tasty! We’d kept a plate from the salad anyway so at least one extra person could move their portion to a plate from the shared plate.
Then out came the main meal, a rather large serve of beef, but again, no plates to eat from. We’d managed to hoard enough plates now so we could at least have somewhere to cut our beef strips into bite size pieces.
Last up was cheese and nuts however by this time they’d taken all our plates so we were again using our napkins as plates for cracking nuts and eating cheese.
Don’t get me wrong though, the food was great as was the service. It’s just the plate thing left us a...
Read moreIf your visiting A MUST!!! Very local spot literally no tourist there but the full authentic Basque Experience. We spoke to different people in the restaurant everyone was so friendly and everyone was local. I have never been to a cider house but this was an experience in itself. The menu is pre-set. Affordable. For 2 we spent 62 Euro including 2 bottles of cider.
Originally people would come taste different ciders and choose which ones they want to buy. So people wouldn’t get drunk while trying the ciders they started feeding them which is what now has come to toast have the Cider houses.
The Cider:
Amazing first off! But they have their own way of pouring and drinking them. Don’t just fill the cider to the top. It is taken very much like a shot. Ask the server first how to drink it.
The Food: Wow! The steak is really unbelievable. Probably one of the best that I have had being here this past week. Really Cooked properly and the way the cook it in this region. (Usually on the rare side) Very good!
They have an authentic cheese, walnut and guava desert that is truest authentic. What’s different with this house is you can order ice cream.
Overall amazing. So glad we stumbled across this place on our...
Read moreSan sebastian Town is amazing, we love it but if you want to be like a local then a Friday night at a cider house is the be top option and this place is one of the best. There's nothing fancy, just food and drink, we are veggie and our basque friend had advised them beforehand so I suggest if you are then say so . Our food was so simple but truly amazing, I've never had peppers and onions so tasty, the tortilla had lumps of local cheese instead of cod. For the meaties it's the standard fayre of cider houses. Cod tortilla, salchicon or fish pinxto then the most amazing looking steak, cheese and walnuts with membrillo to end with. To crack the walnuts you place one hand palm down over the nut and belt it with the othe hand in a fist, unless your a bit barmy then you use your head ! The cider is fantastic and a great laugh, it's released from a huge barrel and you catch it in your glass and bring it up to halfway up the flow, not too much, about a double shot size, drink most and throw a bit down the drain, as you can imagine it's not a place for posh clothes. Siderias are the basque country's best secret and as I say, this is one...
