Ramuntxo Berri is a first-rate restaurant where the cooks are not afraid to experiment by adding new ingredients to classic pintxos that make this place a must visit for anyone interested in Basque cuisine. My wife and I came here with the intention of having one pintxo each and moving on to another spot. That all changed after the first round of pintxos. We started with the the carbon de brie, which is a square of brie deep fried and covered with poppy seeds. It comes with a sweet tomato-like sauce that makes for a sumptuous combination. Next up was the txipiron a la plancha, or grilled squid, which was unbelievable. The squid was tender and tasty and covered with an olive oil-butter sauce, which is typical for squid pintxos. But what made this dish stand out was caramelized onions that were sprinkled on top of the squid. It elevated this classic pintxo by adding a unique flavor. The servings came with crispy pieces of fresh bread, which are baked at the restaurant and served warm. Of course, we washed this all down with two classic Basque drinks: sagardoa, or cider, and txakoli, or bubbly white wine. Wanting some fresh vegetables, we ordered the ración, or plate, of sliced tomatoes topped with tuna and onions and covered in an olive oil sauce with salt. The tomatoes were fresh and sweat and the onions and chunks of tuna added a nice texture to this outstanding dish. In some ways, the food at Ramuntxo Berri has taken on the character of the trendy Gros neighborhood where it’s located. Just a few minutes walk from the historic part of Donostia, or San Sebastian, which is home to some of the city’s best pintxo bars, this place features a fresh take on the classic pintxo recipes that have made this city one of Europe’s top food...

They have one of 200 gr on the menu so we ordered that one with specific instructions "medium well done, not red" (it was 35C so no risks). The waitress repeated all of it so all clear. Or ? Order came pretty fast and both the hamburgers were almost raw and not even luke-warm. Called the waitress, who saw immediately what was wrong and took the order back. A few minutes later she came back with the same plates and asked whether it was OK now. Nope, still very very red, very unclear what the kitchen had changed apart from cutting off a piece of the burger. She too saw that, shook her head and took the plates back once more. A few minutes later she came back again, same plates, a handfull of extra fries and an even smaller burger (I think less than 100 gr was left) and those remainders were pink. Which we accepted because we wanted to get this over with. What was left, turned out to be completely tasteless as well and the egg on top was half burned. The cheese that was originally on version 1, had almost completely disappeared. In short : we spent 2 weeks in Bilbao and San Sebastian and had many excellent meals (it doesn't always have to be *) but this was by far the worst experience in the field of food quality and lack of interest in the customer that I have ever come across in the Basque area where good food and friendliness is a tradition. Oh... to top it off... not once a "sorry" and of course I had to pay the full amount. Which was not much as we had no interest ordering anything else in that joke of a restaurant. If you can't even prepare a...
Read moreOur experience with this restaurant is remarkable: we visited this restaurant yesterday, we ordered two fish meals ( monkfish, turbot ) - and it was perfect and delicious. The waiter was professional and the owner (an elder man) was there and seemed to keep an eye on quality. Because of our good experience we returned this evening to the same restaurant. But this time it was a big disappointment: the same grilled monkfish was nearly raw inside and was swimming in oil. The lamb ribs were chewy and with fat gristles... After 20 minutes the (new) waiter returned to our table to ask whether every thing was fine. No, it was not. And he said: "Oh sorry, the fish was not good, it should not happen." But he didn't offer any replacement or anything else. ( Probably, the owner had strictly avoided such a situation, but he was nowhere to see. ) My opinion: the quality of the food should not be a question of luck. It should be constant...
