The Red Cafe — Restaurant in Sant Antoni de Portmany

On our last day in Ibiza, we decided to try paella. From the very beginning, I asked the waiter for it without onions. After checking with the chef, he said it wasn’t possible because the sauce contains onions. I agreed to have the onions because I really wanted to try this popular dish.

We ordered paella with both meat and seafood. They tasted fine, but the rice in the sauce was really strange. Since it was our first time trying the dish, we thought maybe that’s how it’s supposed to be.

Most likely, the sauce—which they couldn’t make without onions—had been sitting around for a while, because we ended up getting seriously food poisoned. It’s already been four days, and the symptoms haven’t changed. It feels like there was some kind of harmful bacteria in it—I’ve never experienced anything like this before. Now my stomach can’t tolerate any food at all.

What’s more, it was strange that you couldn’t order a smaller portion. They bring out this huge pan for €50, and you feel compelled to eat it because it’s a lot of money—without knowing, as a tourist, what the dish is actually supposed to taste like. I usually don‘t write reviews on Google, but this place I will definitely never forget.

To start out with the positives: The place looks nice, the menu is a great read, staff is friendly. My partner had the Ceasar Salad, which was kinda okay, nothing special, but fair for the price.

I had the Big Mama Burger, which had me on the edge of my seat upon its arrival at our table. It looked gross, especially the „bacon“ gave me nightmares the night after. Unfortunately I was pretty hungry so I ate a decent bit until I just couldn’t take it anymore. The burger was unseasoned, reheated and especially the beef tasted kind of funny. And it didn’t stop there: I spent the full night and today up until now either lying in bed with stomach cramps or hunched over my toilet spewing my soul out.

I‘m not even going to touch upon the „aioli“ that we had on the side, I‘ve had better one bought from a store for less than 1€.

Un esperienza molto particolare. Spero che il titolare/ responsabile e il cuoco del ristorante facciano caso a questa segnalazione. Siamo arrivati io e la mia ragazza alle 12:30 con il locale praticamente vuoto, abbiamo ordinato un pollo tikka Masala e un thai curry. Di discreta qualità con riso precotto e gommoso ma questo è accettabile. Letteralmente 1 minuto dopo che avevamo ordinato mi sono alzato e diretto dentro per chiedere al cameriere se gentilmente poteva sostituire il pollo al curry (appena ordinato) con una caesar salad sperando non creasse problemi. Io stesso essendo un cuoco di cucina da anni non mi aspettavo ci fossero problemi a cambiare una comanda appena presa. Il cameriere davanti ai miei occhi chiese al cuoco al pass se poteva fare questo cambio e il cuoco rispose che ormai aveva già messo su le padelle e che non poteva fare il cambio. Anche questo mi fece un po’ storcere il naso in quanto la comanda era appena stata inviata. Quindi il cameriere mi risponde che non era possibile fare l’insalata e giustamente mi sono permesso di dirgli che non era il modo corretto di trattarci, al contrario non avrei detto nulla se mi fossi alzato per chiederglielo 10 minuti più tardi rispetto all orario dell ordine. Dopo aver discusso qualche minuto e dopo avergli pregato di cambiare il piatto mi dice che lo avrebbe fatto. Arriviamo al servizio, dopo 5 minuti ci vengono serviti i due piatti di pollo, (Tikka masala e curry) da un altro cameriere. Quindi mi alzo nuovamente e chiedo spiegazioni al cameriere che mi aveva promesso il cambio per l’insalata, che ingenuamente mi risponde che il cuoco era arrabbiato e non aveva voglia di fare anche l’insalata. A questo punto siamo arrivati alla follia pura in quanto alla fine ci era stato servito un piatto che non volevamo e in piu l’insalata non era stata appuntata. Perciò con molta calma gli ho spiegato che questo comportamento nell’ ambito del osteleria non è assolutamente consono e dopo un ulteriore discussione il cuoco scansafatiche ci ha finalmente servito questa insalata che ovviamente hanno dovuto offrirci visto il disagio. È stata una situazione surreale che non dovrebbe mai accadere ma purtroppo essendo del settore sono consapevole che questo lavoro può essere snervante ma comunque ci vuole sempre passione e amore e l’attenzione al cliente è la cosa più importante. Ci tengo a precisare che il cameriere ha fatto tutto io possibile per accontentarci ma purtroppo con dei personaggi del genere in cucina immagino sia anche difficile e...
