spoonery is my go-to spot to take friends and family who are visiting malmö--they must try köttbullar, or swedish meatballs, at least once! i've been to the västergatan location and came to the st. knut's location while in the area -- it is a very cute location with outdoor picnic benches as well as indoor seating (more than the other location).
came at 11:40am on a sunday. order at the counter then take your own water, silverware, and bread. if you sit outside, they call your order number and place your dishes on a table to pick up.
the swedish meatballs are 135SEK and came with ~6 meatballs, potatoes, pickled cucumber, and lingonberry. don't be fooled by the pictures -- the portion is actually huge and so filling. the meatballs are nice, taste more fresh than store-bought. this time, the gravy was a little salty though. a very heavy meal for me, but it was good.
they also have some other dishes like korean bibimbap, hot pot, fish soup, and beef stews that it seemed like locals were eating.
update: i tried the fish stew! more vegetables than fish itself but it was a nice change and i liked the dill. if you’re coming to spoonery for the first time though, the meatballs are a...
Read moreSpoonery started out great, but in the last few years, they've really changed. Let's start with the positives: beautiful interior, wide/interesting variety of sodas and snacks, cozy location.
The negatives: The food always feels improperly seasoned. The soups are never balanced between flavors or textures, like they're not tasting it or not caring––or like they're not used to cooking with the spices/herbs they use.
For example, I had a vegetarian lentil stew that had a fist-sized clump of coriander/cilantro. The clump was chopped but only barely. This felt like a ripoff for the amount it cost and the hype around the place. The coffee has also become a bit of a letdown now, too.
This is quite sad, as I remember liking them a lot when they first opened. I still love them for the atmosphere, but unfortunately, this is a...
Read moreI was two days there to try the Swedish meatballs. Because in day one I received the dish in less then 5 minutes, I figured all was prepared before and was sceptic about the cooking method. So in day two I’ve been trying other pub( I found it typing on google the best meatballs in Malmo). The second one served me in 5 minutes also. There were 2 differences comparing to Spoonery : the taste of meatballs was a 10-15% better/the taste of the sauce was 20-30% stronger, different and perhaps better. The second difference was the price: TRIPLE! So like I said into the beginning, here I was in day 3 again to enjoy the dish once more. So, in my opinion the triple price was not worth it at all. Great taste and I was leaving with the sadness that I couldn’t try the rest...
