I went there to treat myself on my birthday (12.12) during my stay in Switzerland. The restaurant got 5 stars and I know now why. The ambience, decor, feel, vibes are perfect. The main server was very attentive and gave me menu in English. Usually vegetarian dishes are hit or miss especially where the main food is meat. But the assorted platter was delicious. I emptied the plate. The wine omg. Smooth velvety taste. The lady who asked how my food is, later I got to know she's one of the owners, spent time talking which is pretty unusual for culture here. I excitedly told her I'm visiting Switzerland and treating myself with a birthday meal. Later when I asked for check I was wondering what was taking long, only to have this server bring out a traditional Swiss dessert and sparkles with happy birthday written in Swiss (Alle glutes). Read moreGasthof Zum Schutzen is very small but a nice alternative if staying in Aarau. Rooms are small and limited in number but it's a nice family run, home-like atmosphere. The establishment's main focus seems to be around their restaurant and catering service. Dinner meals were excellent. Breakfast is standard continental fare and I felt quite adequate. I like their small inside bar area however the outside patio is really nice when the weather is good. Rear facing rooms suffer a bit of railway noise; otherwise it's a quite street intersection across from a school and sports field. Very short walk to the historic part of Aarau and plenty of other restaurants close by, as well as shopping. Ability to communicate in English was a bit limited but in no way a detractor. I have to travel to Aarau on business several times per year. This hotel is my prefered amongst the local selections. Only 10 guest rooms are available so plan ahead...
